WASHINGTON, September 29. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has backed a proposal to ease some American sanctions on Russia, The Atlantic reported.

According to the magazine’s sources, Trump’s special envoy for Belarus, John Coale, presented the idea to him several months ago. The proposal calls for Washington to relax some restrictions on the Russian economy in exchange for Moscow releasing several prisoners. The plan could pave the way for "lucrative deals involving Russian oil, diesel, rare earth minerals, and other commodities," the magazine said. It added that the initiative remains in its early stages and had not been reported previously.

The Atlantic said Coale had tested the approach in Belarus and, with President Donald Trump's approval, planned to try the "same trick" with Russia. Trump has said the United States is willing to buy potash fertilizer from Belarus.

"All this stuff works toward the possibility of peace," Coale told the magazine. He argued that more interaction and "the more trade-offs" over economic matters, prisoners or other issues could gradually bring peace closer. That, he said, was the aim. "Economic ties usually result in normality," Coale added.

According to the article, Coale plans to coordinate his efforts with Steve Witkoff, the US president's special envoy. The magazine said the approach would likely anger Ukrainians, Europeans and many of Trump's allies in Congress.

Moscow has repeatedly said it considers Western sanctions, including US restrictions on Russia, illegal. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the record number of sanctions have been ineffective while causing damage to those who imposed them.
