MOSCOW, September 23. /TASS/. The question of selecting a new UN Secretary-General will be in focus in the organization's corridors during the High-Level Week, Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, has told TASS ahead of the participation of Russia’s delegation - led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov - in the UN General Assembly's High-Level Week.

"No formal events, including the next round of 'indicative' votes in the UN Security Council, are scheduled for the week of September 21; however, the topic of appointing a new Secretary-General will obviously be a key one in the corridors of the global organization's headquarters during the High-Level Week," Logvinov said. "Who knows - perhaps that is where other contenders might surface."

According to Logvinov, "the three rounds of 'indicative' votes held so far in the UN Security Council do not make it clear which of the eight candidates is the most acceptable choice for the post of the new Secretary-General."

Contenders for the post of Secretary-General this year include Rafael Grossi (Argentina), head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); Rebeca Grynspan (Costa Rica), Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2018-2022); Macky Sall, former President of Senegal; Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, former Foreign Minister and Defense Minister of Ecuador; Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN; Ivonne Baki, former Ecuadorian Ambassador to the US and France; and Olara Otunnu, Uganda’s former Permanent Representative to the UN.
