One of the biggest highlights of A24’s San Diego Comic-Con panel was Adam Wingard‘s Onslaught, and now the studio has unleashed a brand-new trailer that’s every bit as insane as fans were hoping.

While the first trailer felt like an all-out assault of gunfire, explosions, and nonstop carnage, this latest look slows things down just enough to introduce the key players before unleashing absolute mayhem. It also gives us a much better sense of the film’s story, which revolves around a former Army sniper (Adria Arjona) fighting to protect her young daughter after a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers escapes into the desert.

If the first trailer introduced the chaos, this one introduces the monsters.

The genetically enhanced soldiers don’t simply look like futuristic commandos—they’re hulking, unstoppable killing machines that immediately call to mind Kane Hodder’s most intimidating turns as Jason Voorhees. Imagine if somebody smashed together The Terminator, Wolfenstein, and Friday the 13th, then handed the keys to Adam Wingard. That’s the energy this trailer is giving off.

There’s blood everywhere. Bullets don’t seem to slow these monsters down for long, and every action sequence looks bigger, nastier, and more violent than the last.

More importantly, this trailer finally lets the cast shine.

Leading the charge is Adria Arjona as the sniper forced into survival mode, joined by an absolutely stacked supporting cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, Drew Starkey, Michael Biehn, Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, and Alex Pereira.

For me, though, the biggest takeaway is how completely unrestrained this movie feels.

After spending years directing giant studio productions like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Onslaught looks like the movie Adam Wingard has been itching to make all along. It has the gonzo energy of The Guest, the unapologetic violence of his earlier work with Simon Barrett, and the confidence of a filmmaker who was simply told to go make the craziest movie he could imagine.

Onslaught is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated movies of the year. It has all the makings of the kind of cult classic horror fans will still be discovering, quoting, and dissecting 20 years from now.

Onslaught opens in theaters on September 4.
