Police have confirmed in a heartbreaking update that the two individuals who lost their lives following an incident at Fistral Beach were a father and daughter.

Devon and Cornwall Police were contacted by the South Western Ambulance Service at approximately 9.45pm on Sunday, July 26, following reports that two people had been pulled from the water.

Coastguard rescue teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes attended the scene, alongside Newquay RNLI lifeboats and a HM Coastguard helicopter.

Despite the considerable efforts of the emergency services, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s, both from Doncaster, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The force confirmed that their families have been notified, and their thoughts remain with them during this incredibly difficult period, reports Cornwall Live.

A file will now be prepared for HM Coroner, with the force extending its gratitude to all emergency service personnel and members of the public who assisted in responding to the tragic incident.

The woman who lost her life is believed to have entered the water carrying a handbag described as orange or peach in colour, with a shoulder strap.

The leather-style bag, measuring approximately 30cm by 30cm, is thought to contain a number of personal items of considerable sentimental value to her loved ones.

Police say the family would take great comfort in being reunited with these belongings, given the enormously distressing circumstances they are currently facing.
