Viruses cause a huge range of illnesses, but vaccines can help protect you against these infections.
Viruses are tiny hijackers.
These germs are simple microbes. Each one is just a set of genetic instructions — either DNA or RNA — inside a protein pouch. Unlike living cells, like those found in a person, viruses don’t have the tools to reproduce. So to make copies of itself, a virus must infect something else.
That “something else” might be an animal, plant or even bacterial cell. Once inside, a virus will use its host cell’s machinery to copy its genetic code and build more versions of itself. These newly spawned viruses then go off to infect other cells. This process often kills the host cells — which is why a viral infection can make you sick.
The Cleveland Clinic offers a great analogy for how this works: “It’s like someone breaking into your house to use your kitchen. The virus brought its own recipe, but it needs to use your dishes, measuring cups, mixer and oven to make it. (Unfortunately, they usually leave a big mess when you finally kick them out.)”
Viruses cause a huge range of illnesses. Some, like the common cold, aren’t that bad. Others can be quite serious. Polio, Zika, dengue fever, measles, COVID-19 and the flu are just a few examples of viral diseases. Unlike bacteria, viruses can’t be wiped out with antibiotics. But vaccines can help protect you and your pets from dangerous viral infections.
Winter is prime time for some airborne viruses to spread, including the flu, COVID-19 and the common cold. That’s partly because some viruses thrive in dry wintry air. Another factor is that in winter people spend a lot of time inside, where they can more easily catch infections from each other.
To protect yourself from viral hijackers, consider using a humidifier or air filter. And if you’re feeling under the weather — or around someone who is — consider masking up.

ActivitiesViruses are super, duper tiny. Much tinier than the cells in your body. So tiny, in fact, that an estimated 500 million rhinovirus germs — which cause the common cold — could fit on the head of a pin. That may be hard to picture. But this activity from Science Buddies can help you wrap your brain around just how extremely small viruses are.
antibiotic: A germ-killing substance, usually prescribed as a medicine (or sometimes as a feed additive to promote the growth of livestock). It does not work against viruses.
bacteria: (singular: bacterium) Single-celled organisms. These dwell nearly everywhere on Earth, from the bottom of the sea to inside other living organisms (such as plants and animals). Bacteria are one of the three domains of life on Earth.

cell: (in biology) The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism. Typically too small to see with the unaided eye, it consists of a watery fluid surrounded by a membrane or wall. Depending on their size, animals are made of anywhere from thousands to trillions of cells. Most organisms, such as yeasts, molds, bacteria and some algae, are composed of only one cell.
COVID-19: A name given to the disease that erupted into a massive global pandemic in 2020. It first emerged in 2019 and is caused by a new coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2. Symptoms can include pneumonia, trouble breathing, feeling too tired to walk more than a few steps, fever, headaches, low blood-oxygen levels, blood clots and brain “fog.”
dengue: A potentially lethal infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. No vaccine yet exists to prevent infection with the virus responsible for the disease, which causes high fevers, severe headache, joint pain, pain behind the eyes, rash, bone pain and sometimes mild bleeding. A more severe form of the disease, known as dengue hemorrhagic fever can cause uncontrolled bleeding if not treated right away.
DNA: (short for deoxyribonucleic acid) A long, double-stranded and spiral-shaped molecule inside most living cells that carries genetic instructions. It is built on a backbone of phosphorus, oxygen, and carbon atoms. In all living things, from plants and animals to microbes, these instructions tell cells which molecules to make.
factor: Something that plays a role in a particular condition or event; a contributor. (in math) The numbers (or any algebraic expressions) that can divide another number (or expression) evenly, with no remainder. For example, 2 and 5 are factors of 10 (as 10 can be divided by 2 and give you 5, with no leftovers). Ten's other factors are 1 and 10.
filter: (n.) Something that allows some materials to pass through but not others, based on their size or some other feature.
flu: Short for influenza. It is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever and severe aching. It often occurs as an epidemic.
genetic: Having to do with chromosomes, DNA and the genes contained within DNA. The field of science dealing with these biological instructions is known as genetics. People who work in this field are geneticists.
germ: Any one-celled microorganism, such as a bacterium or fungal species, or a virus particle. Some germs cause disease. Others can promote the health of more complex organisms, including birds and mammals. The health effects of most germs, however, remain unknown.
host: (in biology and medicine) The organism (or environment) in which some other thing resides. Humans may be a temporary host for food-poisoning germs or other infective agents.
infect: To spread a disease from one organism to another. This usually involves introducing some sort of disease-causing germ to an individual.
infection: A disease that can spread from one organism to another. It’s usually caused by some type of microbe.
measles: A highly contagious disease, typically striking children. Symptoms include a characteristic rash across the body, headaches, runny nose, and coughing. Some people also develop pinkeye, a swelling of the brain (which can cause brain damage) and pneumonia. Both of the latter two complications can lead to death. Fortunately, since the middle 1960s there has been a vaccine to dramatically cut the risk of infection.
polio: An infectious viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause temporary or permanent paralysis.
protein: A compound made from one or more long chains of amino acids. Proteins are an essential part of all living organisms. They form the basis of living cells, muscle and tissues; they also do the work inside of cells. Antibodies, hemoglobin and enzymes are all examples of proteins. Medicines frequently work by latching onto proteins.
range: The full extent or distribution of something. For instance, a plant or animal’s range is the area over which it naturally exists.
RNA: A molecule that helps “read” the genetic information contained in DNA. A cell’s molecular machinery reads DNA to create RNA, and then reads RNA to create proteins.
tool: An object that a person or other animal makes or obtains and then uses to carry out some purpose such as reaching food, defending itself or grooming.
vaccine: (v. vaccinate) A biological mixture that resembles a disease-causing agent. It is given to help the body create immunity to a particular disease. The injections used to administer most vaccines are known as vaccinations.
virus: Tiny infectious particles consisting of genetic material (RNA or DNA) surrounded by protein. Viruses can reproduce only by injecting their genetic material into the cells of living creatures. Although scientists frequently refer to viruses as alive or dead, in fact many scientists agree that viruses are not truly alive. They don’t eat as animals do or make their own food as plants do. A virus must hijack the cellular machinery of a living cell to survive.
Zika: A viral disease that can be transmitted to humans via mosquitoes. About 20 percent of infected people get sick. Symptoms include a slight fever, rash and pinkeye and usually fade quickly. A growing body of evidence suggests that the virus could also cause a devastating birth defect — microcephaly. Evidence suggests it may also cause neurological conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome.
