With the hybrid convenience of a tablet and a smartphone, foldable offerings have gained ground in the mainstream market. Even so, the form factor, both unfolded and in candybar mode, may still not be a good size for some, so Samsung has refreshed its lineup to include an all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The naming convention can be a bit confusing, but this isn’t the same Fold with seven generations to its name. Rather, it refers to the company’s first 4:3 foldable, with the existing base model upgraded to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and accompanied by the Z Flip 8. Unveiled at this year’s Samsung Unpacked event alongside the Galaxy Watch 9 and Ultra 2 series, the devices are all outfitted with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset and Galaxy AI features.

Coming after the Huawei Pura X, available only in China and select Asian markets, the wide foldable fits a 4:3 aspect ratio into a 7.6-inch QXGA+ OLED inner display (1,848 x 2,448 resolution) when fully open, offering the ideal configuration for both landscape and portrait viewing. Alongside a 5.5-inch WUXGA+ cover screen (1,248 x 1,972 resolution) with a 10:16 aspect ratio, it also measures 4.5mm thin and weighs 201 grams (versus 233 grams for the iPhone 17 Pro Max), making it smaller than the average passport and handy to carry around.

“This new form factor really hits a sweet spot for our region [Southeast Asia]. It is a very mobile‑first population that’s streaming, browsing, reading, and gaming on their phones.” – Carl Nordenberg, VP & Regional Head of Mobile eXperience Business.

Camera-wise, users can expect a dual 50-megapixel (MP) wide and ultrawide setup on the back, a 10MP main snapper, and the Dual Recording feature that enables simultaneous recording on both the rear and selfie cameras. Like before, Photo Assist will be available as part of the AI-powered photo-editing suite, comprising Sketch to Image, Generative Edit, and Portrait Studio. The existing Document Scan, meanwhile, can detect edges, capture multiple pages, and remove unwanted shadows or similar elements on the documents to be scanned.

New to the series is My FanCam, which puts a particular subject into focus and tracks their movement across the display. Other notable features of the Z Fold 8 include a 3,000-nit peak brightness, a 4,800mAh battery that supports up to 26 hours of video playback, and charging speeds of 45W (wired) and 20W (wireless).

As for the Z Fold 8 Ultra, it steps in as the slimmest model in the series to date. The device is 4.1mm thin when unfolded, compared to 5.6mm on its predecessor, and tips the scales at 215 grams, but now has a 20 per cent wider design. The outer and inner OLED displays measure 6.5 inches and 8 inches, respectively, equipped with FHD+ (1,2080 x 2,520) and QXGA+ (2,504 x 2,256) resolutions. Both the triple-camera system and battery capacity have also been upgraded, taking the form of a 50MP ultrawide camera — which joins a 200MP wide snapper and a 10MP telephoto camera — and a 600mAh bump to 5,000mAh. Elsewhere, the main and cover cameras remain unchanged at 10MP each.

Rounding out the latest generation of foldables, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 is touted as the leanest and lightest Flip model (there’s certainly a pattern here) at 180 grams. Measuring 1.25mm when extended, it boasts a 6.9-inch FHD+ main display (1,080 x 2,520 resolution) and a 4.1-inch Super AMOLED cover screen with a 948 x 1,048 resolution. Alongside a 50MP main camera powered by the company’s ProVisual Engine imaging system and a 12MP ultrawide snapper on the rear, as well as a 10MP selfie camera, users can expect the Super Steady with Horizontal Lock feature — first introduced in the Galaxy S26 series — in FlexCam mode and a more comfortable and stable hold with Camcorder Grip with Zoom Rocker. Other software updates include a more intuitive FlexWindow Home redesign, an improved Now Brief, and AI-driven automation for simple commands to do more.

As part of the larger Galaxy AI suite, the latter two will be available across all the foldables, accompanying the likes of Now Nudge that analyses on-screen content in real-time and offers suggestions, Gemini Intelligence, and Gemini Notebook, allowing users to gather notes, images, recordings, files, and documents to one workspace or drag and drop them in split view.

The Z Fold 8 range debuts in Singapore starting 14 August with the following colour options: Lavender, Cream, Graphite, and Pistachio (online exclusive) for the base model, and Violet Shadow, Cream, Graphite, and Green Shadow (online exclusive) for the Ultra. Prices start at S$2,498 and S$2,798, respectively, for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Z Flip 8 retails for S$1,678 (12GB + 256GB) or S$1,978 (12GB + 512GB) and is available in Pink, Cream, Graphite, and Mint (online exclusive). Pre-order for the all-new devices is now open at the following:

For customers unsure about making the switch, Samsung’s Easy Mode Club programme lets them try the device over a 28-day trial period, after which they can choose to purchase or return it. Registration runs till 8 August, 11.59 pm SGT (GMT+8).
