From interesting origins to unexpected dangers, there may be ~a lot~ of things you don't know about your favorite foods. So, here are 29 food facts that are weird, gross, and actually fascinating:
1. Oysters are often consumed while they're still alive or only very recently deceased because they spoil quickly.
2. Bananas are botanically classified as true berries, while strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are not.
3. In the 1830s, ketchup was marketed as a cure for indigestion, jaundice, and diarrhea.
4. Peanuts aren't actually nuts — they grow underground and belong to the same family as beans and lentils.
6. Nutmeg can be toxic when consumed in excess due to a compound called myristicin, which can cause hallucinations, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and other serious symptoms.
7. Cashews grow hanging from the bottom of a cashew apple fruit. They're actually seeds, not nuts!
8. The ancient Mayan civilization valued cacao beans so highly that they used them as currency.
9. Red bell peppers contain nearly three times the vitamin C of an orange.
10. Castoreum, a secretion from beaver glands, has been used as a natural vanilla flavoring, though it's rare today.
11. Arachibutyrophobia is known as the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth.
12. Natural cheddar is usually pale yellow from beta-carotene in grass. Orange cheddar gets its color from added annatto dye.
13. The red food dye carmine is made from crushed cochineal insects. It's used in foods, cosmetics, and more.
14. Rhubarb stalks are edible, but their leaves contain high levels of oxalic acid and other toxic compounds that can cause serious illness.
15. Fresh, ripe cranberries can literally bounce because they have tiny air pockets inside them.
16. Carolina Reapers contain so much capsaicin that they can trigger intense pain, sweating, hiccups, vomiting, and even severe headaches in some people.
17. Most vanilla flowers must be hand-pollinated, and the beans take months to cure after harvesting — which is why real vanilla is so expensive.
19. Real wasabi root is extremely rare and expensive. Most restaurants use a horseradish-based substitute with green food coloring.
20. Gelatin in Jell-O is made from collagen extracted by boiling animal bones, skin, and connective tissue.
21. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which breaks down proteins; so, it's sometimes used as a meat tenderizer. (Bromelain is also why your mouth feels tingly after eating pineapple!)
22. The traditional Sardinian cheese Casu Marzu is fermented with insect larvae, which help break it down into an ultra-soft texture.
25. The white strings, aka the fibrous strands, on a banana are called phloem bundles, and they transport nutrients throughout the developing banana.
26. Popcorn kernels pop because they contain a small amount of water trapped inside a hard shell. When heated, the pressure builds until the kernel explodes and turns inside out.
28. Coffee beans aren't actually beans; they are the seeds (or pits) found inside the fruit of the coffee plant, often called a "coffee cherry."
29. Lastly: Brazil nuts are safe to eat, but they can naturally contain small amounts of radioactive elements, like radium.
