We've heard time and time again that appearing on a TV show doesn't always guarantee long-term financial security — and actor Jennifer Hyatt Tedmori just shared another reminder after posting her latest Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide residual checks on Instagram.
The Nickelodeon series premiered in 2004 and became a fan favorite, thanks to its hilarious, painfully relatable take on middle school. Jennifer appeared in 11 episodes playing Huge Crew leader Doris Trembly, and although the series ended in 2007, it continues to stream on Paramount+, Roku, and Prime Video.
On Thursday, Jennifer posted a video opening her latest batch of residual checks. “It’s that time of the year for me: I got my Ned’s residual checks,” she said, with a stack of envelopes in hand. “Some of these could be a penny, some of these could be $5.”
Jennifer then opened the first check, which was for a 2006 episode, revealing it was worth just two cents.
"I know hard times, economy is shit, but, like, two cents? Like, keep it! Just fucking keep it. I don't want it!" she said.
It didn't get much better from there. Jennifer opened check after check worth just a few cents, revealing amounts like 68 cents, 81 cents, 36 cents, 45 cents, and a dollar.
After adding everything up, her Ned's residuals amounted to just $8.63. Jennifer said that, combined with residuals she earned from 90210, she made about $30 altogether. "Maybe I can go buy a coffee at Starbucks," she concluded.
Needless to say, people were furious.
"Absolutely infuriating," one person commented.
Jennifer's Ned's Declassified costar Brooke Marie Bridges also chimed in, saying it was "so annoying," and that she also gets "20 checks for a total of $15 from Ned's."
"This is OBSURD," another added. "Literal pennies....."
Others argued that actors deserve better compensation for their work, especially when shows continue to find new audiences through streaming years after their initial airings.
People were also frustrated at the total waste of paper used to print the checks, with many pointing out that the postage likely cost more than the payment itself.
Still, plenty commenters said they'd cash every single one out of principle. "I'd cash them just to be petty," one person wrote, as another agreed, "Whether it's 1 cent or 5 cents I need all of my coins."
