Why the modern hallway is stepping up its game

Published Jul 24, 2026  •  3 minute read

The hallway. for years it has existed – largely – to ferry us from A to B, rarely receiving more than a hurried coat of paint or a reluctant console table burdened with unopened post, stray receipts and car keys.

Increasingly, though, we view hallways as more than leftover square footage, and as valuable design territory in their own right.

Arranged well, a corridor doesn’t merely connect one room to another; it creates atmosphere and a subtle introduction to the decorative story unfolding beyond.

Hey, it’s the overture before the orchestra, the slow reveal before the main event and, importantly, one of the few spaces every guest experiences.

The first rule? Stop calling it “just a hallway” and begin thinking of it as a gallery, a library or a boutique hotel lobby in miniature. Every corridor, however inauspicious, has the potential to be given purpose, character and a valuable sense of occasion.

Indeed, because these are fundamentally transitional spaces, they invite decorative confidence: a bolder paint colour, an unexpected artwork or a piece of furniture with enough personality to make people pause rather than simply pass through.

If space allows, tuck an upholstered chair beneath a wall light, position a bench near the door, or introduce a sculptural console to display seasonal branches or flowers.

Even a corridor a metre or so wide can become a beautifully curated exhibition of art, photography or treasured finds, revealing something of those who live in the rooms beyond. The key is restraint. Allow individual pieces room to breathe, and resist the urge to fill every available wall simply because it’s there.

Lighting is another important consideration. Wall sconces, for example, soften architectural lines and introduce pools of gentle light, whilst picture lamps transform artwork into beautifully considered focal points.

Wherever possible, choose warm white bulbs rather than harsh, cool LEDs, to help paint colours and finishes feel more grounded. Layered lighting (pots, too, on a dimmer) is particularly effective after dusk, when a softly illuminated hallway can feel wonderfully atmospheric and less like a domestic thoroughfare.

Every hallway, as we see it, has something worth celebrating, be it original mouldings, lofty ceilings, or long sightlines (like our project featured here) that draw the eye through the home. Wherever possible, keep things clutter free and introduce storage that works hard without demanding attention.

Ours was given the “custom” treatment by our carpenter (disguising its inauspicious but well-constructed IKEA roots) to establish a practical home for outdoor clothing, shoes and all the everyday paraphernalia that so easily gathers near the door.

Further counsel? Floating consoles preserve precious floor space, whilst woven baskets, concealed hooks and discreet drawers help tame visual chaos. Come on now: luxury isn’t always about owning less, it’s (sometimes) about seeing less.

Thoughtful joinery, painted to merge quietly with surrounding walls, can bring an almost architectural quality to even the most modest passageway, proving that practicality needn’t come at the expense of polish.

An oversized mirror will typically have more impact than a scatter of undersized prints, particularly in a confined space where decorative gestures need to work harder.

As well as amplifying perceived width, it’ll bounce light deeper into the home and create a confident focal point without taking up a single inch of valuable space underfoot. Position yours to reflect something worth seeing – a handsome doorway, a favourite artwork or a glimpse of the room beyond – rather than allowing it to duplicate clutter.

Flooring, too, deserves careful consideration, being that it quietly influences the way in which we experience the home as a whole. Quality flooring (that which you see here is by Kentwood) and a beautiful runner (we sourced this one on Amazon) will draw visitors forward whilst softening footsteps and introducing texture.

Wherever possible, continue flooring – seamlessly – into adjoining rooms, as we did here, because uninterrupted flow creates visual calm and helps space feel larger and more cohesive.

Okay, so hallways mightn’t ever host dinner parties or movie nights, but there’s no denying they can be commandeered to establish domestic expectation, and to set the mood for everything that follows.

More than that, they remind us that balanced design shouldn’t be considered the exclusive preserve of headline rooms. The finest homes, after all, are rarely defined by one spectacular space, but by the quiet consistency and considered detail that connect every room.

And besides, as the old saying goes, we only get one opportunity to make a first impression…
