Space feels ‘beautifully connected to the rest of the home’

Transforming an unfinished basement into a fully customized entertainment and wellness retreat provided unique design opportunities and challenges.

“The vision was to create a space that balanced entertainment, relaxation and wellness while maintaining the same warmth and sophistication found throughout the rest of the house,” says Adrian Patron, designer and creative director of Apto Design. “The goal was to design an inviting environment that would be equally suited for everyday enjoyment and hosting friends.”

The design includes a custom wet bar, home theatre, games area with pool and foosball tables, dedicated gym, sauna and integrated storage. Every element was carefully planned to maximize functionality while maintaining a cohesive, elevated design, Patron reports.

The cabinetry and millwork were custom designed and handcrafted, allowing every inch of the space to be tailored to the home’s architecture and the homeowner’s lifestyle. “From the material selections and lighting design to the layout and finishing details, each decision was made with both practicality and visual impact in mind,” he says. “The result is a beautifully finished lower level that feels intentional, welcoming and seamlessly connected to the rest of the home.”

When designing the custom wet bar, the goal was to create a feature that felt both refined and inviting. Walnut veneer laminate cabinetry, handcrafted by NOCI Bespoke Cabinetry, brings warmth, texture and a sense of craftsmanship to the space.

The custom millwork was carefully designed to provide functional storage while maintaining a clean, seamless aesthetic with fully integrated appliances concealed behind custom panels.

The cabinetry was paired with a Palomino natural stone island countertop and a dramatic backlit Patagonia natural stone feature, creating a beautiful focal point within the entertainment area.

Thoughtfully layered lighting was incorporated to enhance the atmosphere and highlight the natural materials, architectural details and quality of the craftsmanship throughout the space.

“The result is a sophisticated, yet welcoming, bar area designed for both everyday enjoyment and entertaining,” says Patron.

The greatest design challenge was incorporating a wide range of amenities into the available space while preserving an open, balanced layout. “Every area needed to serve multiple purposes without feeling crowded or compromising the overall flow. At the same time, we wanted to introduce warmth, texture and character while complementing the home’s clean, modern architecture.”

The finished basement feels both luxurious and welcoming. “One of our favourite features is the open entertainment area, where the custom bar and games space flow seamlessly together, creating an inviting setting for social gatherings with family and friends,” Patron says.

“We are also proud of the thoughtful use of natural materials, layered lighting and custom millwork, which brought warmth and sophistication to the overall basement space. Every detail was carefully considered to ensure the basement feels purposeful, functional and beautifully connected to the rest of the home.”

Designer tips A dramatic backlit natural stone feature creates a beautiful focal point within the entertainment area.

When tackling a renovation, designer Adrian Patron advises homeowners to trust their designer and the process. “A successful renovation is built on collaboration, patience and thoughtful decision making,” he says. “The most successful spaces are those where every detail is considered; not only how it looks but how it feels and how it will function for years to come.”

Lighting is one of the most transformative elements in any space yet is often overlooked until the end of a project, Patron notes. “A well-planned lighting design adds warmth, highlights architectural features and craftsmanship, and allows a space to adapt effortlessly to different moods and occasions,” he says.

“When beauty and functionality are considered together from the very beginning, the result is a home that feels natural, intentional and timeless.”
