The singer pleaded guilty to affray, which in the U.K. is a public order offense where the defendant uses or threatens unlawful violence against another person.
Musician Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray following a confrontation at a London nightclub in 2023.
The BBC reported on Friday that Brown, 37, entered his plea at Southwark Crown Court in a hearing that took less than five minutes.
The incident took place in a nightclub in Mayfair, an upscale area of the British capital. Brown was joined by a co-defendant, his vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, who also performs under the name of Hoody Baby.
Both of them were initially set to face a trial over assault and grievous bodily harm charges, but the charges were later dropped. Brown also faced a charge of having an offensive weapon — a tequila bottle, according to reports — though that was dropped, too.
Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray. Judge Tony Baumgartner scheduled the sentencing hearing for Oct. 26 later this year.
The BBC said that Brown was ordered to pay a £5 million security fee as part of his bail conditions at earlier hearings, which also allowed him to go on a world tour — as long as he surrendered his passport on arrival in each country. “Thank you for coming and supporting me,” he said to fans in Manchester while on tour last year. “And thank you to the jail,” he said, referring to his time in custody. “It was really nice.”
In the U.K., affray is a public order offense where the defendant uses or threatens unlawful violence against another person in a manner that would cause a “hypothetical bystander” to fear for their own safety.
According to the PA news agency, Brown’s fans held signs of support outside the London court today. One of them shouted, “I love you Chris” as he walked by.
The Grammy-winning artist has spent time in prison before — in Los Angeles — for a probation violation. It came after he pleaded guilty to felony assault of his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.
