Acts announced include Sonia Walia, Mumzy Stranger and Miss Pooja

The latest acts set to perform at Middlesbrough Mela have been unveiled ahead of one of the UK’s most vibrant celebrations of culture, music and diversity. Albert Park will play host to the hugely popular event over the weekend of August 15 and 16.

As the festival celebrates its 36th year, organisers say they have laid on a feast of world-class entertainment, international cuisine, family activities and cultural experiences. Topping the Saturday bill in one of the event’s strongest ever line-ups is a renowned tribute to pop legend Michael Jackson.

Also appearing on Saturday will be Sona Walia, one of the world’s most talented female bhangra artists. Global superstar and Sunday headline act Miss Pooja will be supported by pioneering British-Bangladeshi artist Mumzy Stranger, known for blending South Asian influences with contemporary R&B, hip-hop, Afrobeats, UK urban and global pop sounds.

Also on Sunday’s line-up are multi award-winning, singer, songwriter and composer Veronica, recognised as a pioneer of South Asian fusion music, and renowned British Bhangra band XLNC.

Kash Patel, executive director of Middlesbrough Mela and curator of the Main Stage programme, said: “Every year we aim to deliver first-class entertainment with something for everyone, and that’s certainly the case with this year’s stellar line-up.

“Middlesbrough Mela has built up a reputation as one of the best events of its kind not just in the UK but globally, and that’s why we’re able to attract international talent of this calibre year in, year out. We’re proud to be able to do that here, and can’t wait to welcome everyone to what promises to be the best Mela yet.”

BBC Asian Network will once again return as the event’s official broadcast partner and host. Beyond the music, Middlesbrough Mela is renowned for its dazzling selection of international food and drink, bustling shopping bazaar, free cultural workshops, giant funfair and extensive programme of children’s activities.

The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, between noon and 7pm. The event is free for all and tickets are not required.
