Mozilla has released a preview of native Containers in Firefox 153, integrating the functionality of the Multi-Account Containers extension directly into the browser.

According to Mozilla's announcement published on July 21, 2026, Containers separate cookies and tracking data between different browsing contexts, enabling users to stay signed into multiple accounts on the same site within a single window. This feature is available by default in Firefox 153 and does not require an extension.

Mozilla notes that this is a preview release. The built-in version does not yet include all the features of the original Multi-Account Containers extension.

What Firefox 153’s Native Containers Do and What’s Included in the Preview

Each container has its own cookie jar. Activity in one container isn’t visible to sites loaded in another, preventing cross-context tracking between different parts of a user's browsing. Mozilla explains this by pointing out that product searches in one container won’t trigger ads in unrelated browsing sessions.

Mozilla highlights practical uses such as managing multiple accounts on the same social platform, separating work projects from personal shopping, and isolating banking activity from regular browsing.

The Multi-Account Containers extension has supported this for nearly a decade, and Mozilla states that the native feature maintains the core functionality, flexibility, and visual identity of the add-on.

With the Firefox 153 preview, users can open tabs in specific containers, create and manage containers with custom names, colors, and icons, and adjust container settings via the Firefox settings interface.

Mozilla explains that integrating Containers as a first-party feature aims to keep the capability visible by default. The goal is to avoid requiring users to find an add-on and to support ongoing development of the feature directly within Firefox.

How to Create and Use Containers in Firefox 153

Containers can be accessed through the tab strip and within Firefox settings. You can right-click any tab to open a container from the context menu or long-press the new tab button to choose a container for a new tab.

To create your first container or to rename, change the color, or update the icon of an existing one, open Firefox Settings. You can also manage the entire container list and adjust settings for each container from the same Settings menu.

Existing users of Multi-Account Containers do not need to take any action. Mozilla states that the extension can continue running alongside the built-in Containers feature without uninstalling.

Users relying on features not yet available in the native version, such as per-site container rules, should keep the extension installed until Mozilla confirms full parity.

Missing Features, Feedback Plans, and What’s Next for Multi-Account Containers

Mozilla hasn't published a list of which Multi-Account Containers features are missing from the native implementation, nor has it provided a timeline for when they might be added.

The company describes Firefox 153 as an initial step and mentions plans to refine the experience and develop additional context separation features on top of the current foundation.

Mozilla is gathering feedback on the preview through a dedicated thread on Mozilla Connect. The company has not confirmed when Containers will move out of preview status or whether the Multi-Account Containers extension will eventually be discontinued.
