1. Rupee sees worst single-day fall in a month

The Indian rupee recorded its steepest single-day fall in about a month on Wednesday, closing 60 paise weaker at 95.56 against the US dollar, compared with its previous close of 94.96. The decline followed a sharp rise in global crude oil prices, triggered by escalating tensions involving the US and Iran. Brent crude climbed over 3 per cent and moved closer to $80 a barrel. As India imports nearly 90 per cent of its crude oil needs, higher oil prices raise concerns over inflation and the import bill. Meanwhile, the benchmark 10-year government bond yield rose to 6.76 per cent as bond prices fell. Analysts expect continued pressure on the rupee, though RBI measures to attract foreign currency inflows could provide some support.

2. Tata Motors unveils $100 billion auto revenue goal by FY31, commits $31 billion for growth

Tata Motors has unveiled an ambitious growth plan following the demerger of its passenger and commercial vehicle businesses, targeting $100 billion in automotive revenue by FY31 and over $5 billion in profits. Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the passenger vehicle business aims to grow tenfold, with annual sales exceeding 1.2 million units and a 20 per cent market share. The company plans six new vehicle launches, over 20 refreshes, and EVs contributing more than 30 per cent of sales. Tata Motors and JLR will invest about $31 billion, funded through cash flows and reserves, while expanding exports and strengthening supply chains, cybersecurity, and electrification efforts.

3. Mutual fund assets surpass FPIs for the first time, driven by strong SIP inflows

Retail investors have helped mutual funds overtake foreign portfolio investors, or FPIs, in total assets for the first time. Mutual funds’ assets under control reached ₹76.41 lakh crore, slightly surpassing FPIs’ ₹76.22 lakh crore, driven by steady SIP inflows of over ₹30,000 crore a month. However, FPIs still hold a larger equity portfolio at ₹68.65 lakh crore, compared with mutual funds’ ₹54.50 lakh crore. FPIs have withdrawn $28 billion from equities in six months amid valuation concerns and geopolitical tensions. Experts say rising retail participation, debt fund investments, and ETF adoption signal a structural shift in India’s investment landscape, though FPIs are likely to retain their equity lead for some time.

4. Indian biotech start-ups chase global markets before looking homeward.

Indian biotech start-ups are increasingly finding their first customers in the US and Europe before launching products in India. Bengaluru-based Mestastop, which develops therapies to prevent cancer metastasis, says global markets offer better awareness, faster payments, and higher margins. Investors note that companies can generate significant early revenue overseas, helping fund research and expansion. However, India remains a key long-term market. Some firms, such as Immuneel Therapeutics, continue to follow an India-first strategy. Experts say the trend mirrors the SaaS model: build in India, sell globally, and eventually bring globally validated innovations back to the domestic market.
