Aitor Karanka was thanked directly by Spain's head coach after winning the World Cup

Former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has spoken of his pride after playing a major role in Spain’s World Cup triumph.

Karanka serves as Spain’s sporting director, a role he started in the summer of 2025 following a break from the game after his last coaching role at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

His role is an executive one and sees him take responsibility for long-term sporting strategy, coaching appointments, and youth development, among many other things. He’s also said to be a huge support to head coach Luis de la Fuente.

The Spanish boss even thanked the former Boro boss directly in his post-match press conference after the World Cup final victory over Argentina on Sunday evening.

Reflecting on the experience of being part of his country’s World Cup win, Karanka revealed his pride over a series of posts on social media, alongside pictures of himself holding the famous World Cup trophy.

Karanka wrote: “When I returned home, to the Spanish Football Federation, I set out to follow the example I learned at the Ciudad del Futbol in my early days on the bench.

“To believe in our foundation, in our coaches, in our style of play, and above all in the people who surround us day to day. People with values, humility, and commitment.

“Luis de la Fuente, his technical staff, and every single one of the players have been a true reflection of that legacy of Spanish football.

“My most sincere recognition to them and to all the people who have worked tirelessly to achieve this dream.

“Also to the entire Spanish people who have made us feel their breath from the very first day. WE ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!”

Karanka was a guest on Guillem Balague’s Youtube channel just before the World Cup started. During the interview he was asked to explain exactly what his job with the national team entails.

“Here, it is just to try and help everybody. When I got appointed, the national team was winning the Euros, winning the Nations League. So when I came here, I told Luis and I told the players, ‘I am here to help you’.

“I don’t want to change anything because they are doing really well. So my job is to help the players, to help the coaching staff, to help the marketing and media. I’m one step out and trying to fix everything.”

Middlesbrough are preparing for a big summer as they look to rebuild from the heartarche of missing out on promotion to the Premier League.
