Get out your Post-it and make a note: The long-awaited sequel to the 1997 cult classic “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is officially in production.
20th Century Studios confirmed the news in an Instagram post featuring a photo of Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in costume sitting on chairs on set of the comedy.
“The reunion you’ve been waiting for!” the studio wrote in its post. “The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”
Sorvino responded in the comments, writing: “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!'”
Unlike the original motion picture, the sequel will not see a theatrical release and will instead stream on Hulu and Disney+.
Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell will also reprise their roles in the sequel, and they’ll be joined by Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham, according to the movie’s IMDB, though information on who the new additions will play was not released. The release is expected in 2027.
Kudrow recently hinted about a sequel in the works during an appearance last month on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,” saying “there’s a really funny script, and things are kind of moving toward it.”
The original movie followed best friends Romy (Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow) who, facing a 10-year class reunion, come to the realization that they haven’t accomplished much since graduating high school and lie about their careers to impress their former classmates.
The film opened on April 25, 1997. Despite being rated R, “Romy and Michelle” still managed to get the number two spot its opening weekend, and went on to make $29 million at the box office against a budget of $20 million. It’s popularity, however, grew over the years and became a cult classic as fans connected to their dim-witted characters.
Perhaps the sequel will finally shed light on who’s the Mary and who’s the Rhoda in their relationship.
