The Coniston cafe was criticised for its £13.95 breakfast but its owner has been 'blown away' by the response from punters
Whether it's a day trip or a break away, the Lake District is undoubtedly a popular spot with tourists and its many eating spots benefit from being in such a hot spot. But one cafe in Coniston found itself in the limelight for all the wrong reasons when a TikTok reviewer visited the place and criticised its prices.
The negative clip, slating the £13.95 price of a large breakfast, appeared on the platform earlier this year and sparked a flurry of 'nasty comments' and 'fake reviews'. We reported at the time how owner Gemma Metcalfe broke down in tears as she shared details of the incident on Facebook and pleaded with customers for their support.
It provoked a stunning response and an outpouring of love from fellow customers. So we decided to head to the venue ourselves, stopping off to try the breakfast ahead of a day out at the Lakes.

It was obvious from the off that the review has done nothing to deter customers here and the place was packed out, both inside and out, as we grabbed the last remaining outdoor table. With motorbikes parked up and a dog under almost every table, it's clearly a hit with the many walkers and bikers who descend on this area.
A quick glance around and it's not hard to see how it lives up to its 'pet-friendly' reputation.
There's no shortage of water bowls and buckets of fresh water to top them up, there's a stand full of dog snacks inside the place and even a Dog Wall of Fame packed with photos of customers' pooches. Outside there's a new Dog Wash station up freshen up your dog after a muddy walk or swim.
Breakfast is served until 11.30am so we were just in time to order two of the Big Breakfasts along with a latte and a pot of tea.
Despite quite a queue at the counter, it went down quite quickly, but we were warned it could take up to 40 minutes to get our meals, which are brought to your table.
We weren't in a rush anyway and the drinks arrived after 10 minutes so we could relax with those in the meantime. When the breakfast did arrive half an hour later as promised, it was piping hot and looked the business.
With it you get two slices of bacon, two sausages, tomatoes, mushroom, beans and eggs, which you can choose to have fried or scrambled. You also get two pieces of toast and can pick white or brown.
It doesn't sound like a big deal, but being able to make these little changes is what keeps customers coming back for more.
We were pretty hungry by the time it arrived and were more than happy with the quality of it. The portion sizes were decent too and fuelled us up enough that we didn't need to eat for the rest of the day, except for an obligatory lakeside ice cream of course.
After fearing a negative impact from the TikToker's review, which he'd filmed through Meta glasses and which sparked a flurry of fake reviews under his now deleted video, Gemma says the café has never been busier.
"We have been inundated with people coming and trying out the cafe and met some really lovely people, who have not only commented to myself and staff but have also left some fantastic reviews," she said.
"The only negative has been a couple of people leaving one star reviews that clearly haven’t been, one suggesting food was burnt and cockroaches running around the place, even though health and hygiene rated us 5 stars just this week and we’ve never had a problem with any type of vermin or other pest.
"Apart from that everything had been amazing, the TikTok video was removed. I honestly can’t believe how many people got behind my little business and supported us all. I am blown away."
Gemma added: "We are looking forward to a busy summer and meeting lots more lovely people. I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has supported us."
Her emotional response to the reviewer's video came after Gemma had worked a 13-hour shift at the cafe, which had been inundated with diners when Donald Campbell's restore Bluebird had been back on Coniston Water as part of a week-long event.
Thousands of people reacted to her Facebook post criticising the reviewer and praising the cafe. And hundreds left positive reviews on Google, where the family-run cafe now has a 4.8 star rating.
