An Alabama State University dance team became the center of controversy during Saturday’s football matchup with Florida A&M University after an on-air remark drew immediate backlash.

Joe Bullard, Florida A&M’s band announcer referred to the Honey Beez, ASU’s plus-sized dance team, as “the new face of Ozempic,” prompting shock in the stands and swift condemnation across social media.

The comment came as the Honey Beez exited the field following their halftime performance inside Bragg Memorial Stadium. Within hours, video clips circulated online, fueling widespread outrage among students, alumni, and the broader HBCU community.

ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr. denounced the remark as “short-sighted” and “demeaning.”

In a written statement, he said that heated rivalries should never compromise the dignity of student performers.

“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars,” Ross said.

Ross noted that he had spoken with both Florida A&M’s president and the Southwestern Athletic Conference commissioner, who agreed the comment was unacceptable.

He praised the Honey Beez and the Mighty Marching Hornets for their countless rehearsal hours and “show-stopping” performances that showcase Alabama State pride.

Ross added that they are “celebrated, valued, and admired” for the joy and confidence they bring the university tradition.

Shortly afterward, Florida A&M University President Marva Johnson issued a public apology to Alabama State, the Honey Beez, and Hornet supporters.

Calling the remark “inappropriate and offensive,” Johnson stressed that it did not reflect FAMU’s values or its respect for fellow HBCUs.

“On behalf of Florida A&M University, I extend my deepest and sincerest apologies to the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, President Quinton Ross, and the entire Alabama State University community,” she wrote.

Johnson commended the Honey Beez as a team that “represents discipline, school pride, and performance tradition respected across the nation.”

She also confirmed she spoke directly with Ross and pledged that FAMU will take immediate steps to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
