Created by pro-audio software developer Julian Worden, Plugin Station from Julian Michael Technologies is said to be the most comprehensive plug-in manager available. Julian says he created the application following five years of working in technical support for a plug-in company — a role which saw him witness the most common issues faced by producers and engineers of all levels and helped to inform the software’s development.
Plugin Station centres around System Profiles, which bring together key information about users’ computers and allows them to monitor the state of their installed plug-ins and software. As well as ensuring plug-in versions and licenses are up to date, it’s capable of flagging potential problems such as operating system updates rendering DAWs or plug-ins unusable, allowing users to make more informed choices about whether or not to install a particular update.
It also aims to take some of the pain out of upgrading a studio computer, allowing users to locate the official installers for their entire plug-in collection with a single button click. Those who frequently move between different studios or collaborate with others can share their System Profiles with other Plugin Station, making it possible to check for any compatibility issues ahead of time. General ‘housekeeping’ tasks are covered, too, such as managing how much storage is occupied by plug-ins, and the software will even detect the presence of unnecessary plug-in versions and alert users should they wish to remove them — a system with no Pro Tools installation would highlight any AAX plug-ins taking up space, for example.
Given the developer’s background, it’s perhaps not surprising that Plugin Station also offers some built-in troubleshooting guides. Using a combination of system information and plug-in versions, the software will suggest steps that may resolve common issues, and if those steps are unsuccessful, it will generate a message containing all of the appropriate technical information and connect users directly with the offending plug-in’s manufacturer. There’s even a database that details thousands of plug-ins and provides licensing information as well as allowing users to compare prices across different dealers.
There are four versions of Plugin Station available: Basic, Pro, Studio and Enterprise. Each offer the same features but with a different number of System Profiles — a System Profile is required for each computer the software will be installed on, so users can pick the plan that best meets their setup’s requirements.
