Seven months ago, Jon Holmes became Collegedale's city manager. While that's a relatively short time, it's been long enough to see the positive impact of his leadership.

Many residents may not realize how our commission-manager form of government works. The five elected commissioners establish policy by adopting ordinances, approving contracts, and voting on the city budget. We provide direction, guidance and oversight, while the city manager is responsible for leading our staff and overseeing the daily operations of the city.

Success depends on that partnership.

Recently, several of us attended the Tennessee Municipal League Conference in Kingsport, Tennessee. Jon and I attended Dr. Brenda White Wright’s leadership class, where the focus was on the importance of intentional, effective leadership. It was a great reminder that Jon’s work in Collegedale is just beginning. Before a city can pursue a bold vision for the future, it must first build a strong foundation rooted in trust, teamwork and sound management.

What impresses me most is Jon's leadership style. He listens first, builds relationships and brings people together. Those qualities don't always make headlines, but they are essential to building a healthy organization.

Police Chief Jack Sapp described it this way: “Jon brings valuable experience and a collaborative leadership style to our city and our leadership team. He has been supportive and intentional about taking the time to listen to staff, understand their perspectives, and build strong working relationships. His commitment to teamwork is evident, and I have enjoyed getting to know him. I look forward to continuing our work together and celebrating the successes ahead.”

Public Works Director Kris McAloon shared a similar perspective: “Since joining the city, Jon has demonstrated exceptional leadership through his thoughtful approach and perspective in addressing the challenges facing our community. His genuine appreciation for and understanding of both the management team and staff reflect a sincere commitment to the well-being of those he leads. Jon has brought a welcoming and calming presence to the City, and I’m confident the City of Collegedale will continue to be well served under his leadership for many years to come.”

The greatest compliment a leader can receive is the respect of the people they lead. Hearing that kind of praise from two experienced department heads speaks volumes.

Collegedale continues to grow, bringing both opportunities and challenges. I believe Jon Holmes is helping build the foundation our city needs to meet those challenges - not through fanfare, but through steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and a genuine commitment to serving both our employees and our residents.

I'm optimistic about where our city is headed. Strong leadership is about building an organization that will serve the community well long after any one individual has moved on. I believe we're building that foundation today, and because of that, the future of Collegedale is bright.
