After it was announced that the city of Chattanooga had purchased some acreage on the old Quarry Golf Course for $900,000, I decided to visit the land and take some pictures.

I walked around the side of the old course on the west and Signal Mountain side of Mountain Creek Road and on both sides of the old and empty clubhouse, the latter of which might also be incorporated into a planned park. Hamilton County owns the adjacent Walden’s Ridge Park on the side of the mountain and some area around the trailhead.

On both sides of the clubhouse can be found nice rolling pastureland and some older trees, including what has been called a champion post oak tree on the Signal Mountain side of the clubhouse.

A cattail-lined pond sits close to Mountain Creek Road, as do an old Quarry course sign and a stone-like marker for old No. 7.

The course was originally called the Montclair Golf Club and at one time the Quarry course consisted of 18 holes. It was shortened to nine holes in its last few years of operation.

Pratt Home Builders had eyed building apartments on the land in recent years.
