The race to become Carlton’s next senior coach is entering its most critical stage, with the Blues’ selection panel to meet this week after whittling the field to four contenders, including interim coach Josh Fraser, for one of football’s biggest jobs.

Multiple industry sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because the process is confidential, have confirmed that St Kilda senior assistant Corey Enright, Geelong assistant James Kelly and Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham have all progressed through the opening phase of the process and remain firmly in contention for one of the AFL’s most sought-after roles.

The Blues are also deliberately leaving a seat open in the process for interim coach Josh Fraser should he decide to formally put himself forward.

Fraser has not yet entered the race but has enhanced his credentials since taking over on an interim basis following Michael Voss’ departure and winning seven games from his nine in charge. Rather than shutting the door on their caretaker coach while the season is still unfolding, Carlton have opted to allow Fraser the opportunity to enter the process at a later stage if he wishes.

The coaching selection panel will meet this week to assess the remaining candidates before determining who progresses to the next round of interviews.

Carlton president Rob Priestley is overseeing the search, with chief executive Graham Wright, football boss Chris Davies and Adam Simpson forming the club’s coaching selection panel. The group has spent recent weeks canvassing candidates from across the competition as the Blues seek to appoint the coach they believe can return the club to premiership contention.

Simpson vehemently denied reports two weeks ago that Enright was firming as favourite for the role and that Fraser would enter the process at a later stage.

The latest developments mean several experienced assistants have now fallen out of the race.

Hawthorn assistant Daniel Giansiracusa, Western Bulldogs assistant Brendan Lade and Collingwood’s head of strategy and coaching Hayden Skipworth each held preliminary discussions with Carlton during the opening stages of the process. However, competition sources confirmed the trio will not progress any further.

The remaining candidates each bring contrasting coaching backgrounds.

Enright has long been regarded as one of the competition’s premier assistant coaches. A three-time premiership player with Geelong, he is now Ross Lyon’s senior assistant at St Kilda and has been linked with several senior coaching vacancies over recent years without taking the final step.

Kelly has also built an impressive coaching resume since retiring from a decorated playing career. After beginning his coaching career at Essendon, the former Geelong champion returned to the Cats, where he has become one of Chris Scott’s most trusted assistants.

Graham is viewed across the industry as one of the AFL’s emerging senior coaching prospects. He worked under Simpson at West Coast before switching to Fremantle for the 2022 season and is regarded as one of the best football brains not to be a senior coach.

Fraser remains something of the unknown in the process. While he has not formally entered the race, his work stabilising the Blues during a turbulent period has earned respect internally, prompting the club to leave the door ajar rather than finalise the next stage of the process without him.

Carlton have not publicly committed to a timeline for appointing Voss’ successor, but the search is gathering momentum as the selection panel prepares to trim the field further.
