A mum was left furious after her son came home from school 'dripping with sweat' and 'throwing up' amid the UK heatwave, claiming it was all down to a strict school water ban during lessons

As the heatwave continues to scorch the UK, staying hydrated has become one of the simplest but most important ways to keep children safe and well – especially during the school day, when they’re active, outdoors and often unable to recognise the early signs of dehydration. Health advice in hot weather is clear: drink little and often, keep a water bottle close by and top it up regularly.

That’s why many parents say they’re understandably alarmed when schools introduce strict rules around when, where or how pupils can refill their bottles. One mum took to Facebook to complain about this issue when her son arrived home dripping in sweat and feeling nauseous.

The anonymous mother claimed her son was "made to keep [his] tie on" and was "not allowed to get water refills during their one hour 40 minute lessons".

While she fully appreciates that teachers wish to avoid "distractions" throughout the school day, she believes that if a pupil can "prove" they have no water, they ought to be permitted to refill their bottle so they can focus.

The mother also questioned how many teachers were "wearing ties" while pupils were expected to do so during the heatwave, voicing concern that the weather conditions would persist for the remainder of the term.

TikToker @leeshandmoo shared the woman's post and highlighted that "regulations need to be put in place for schools" during extreme weather conditions, condemning schools as "wrong" for maintaining strict policies on children during such weather.

She challenged whether it truly serves children's welfare to attend school amid such sweltering conditions, arguing that certain teachers seem to get "a weird kick" from denying pupils hydration.

"Make adjustments because kids need to drink water," she declared passionately, adding: "I don't care whether they are four years old or 16 years old; they all need to drink water".

In the comments section, one person observed: "Meanwhile, in my grown-up job, I can drink as much water and pee as often as I like... but no, school prepares them for the 'real world'."

An educator defended her institution's approach, writing: "Teacher here, we've allowed all water bottles on tables, refillable at any point, water stations at break, ice lollies at lunch and we are all still dying! That's what all schools should be doing".

Meanwhile, another contributor remarked: "Just to think a few years ago they managed to still do school from home during Covid, like they clearly can make adjustments when it's needed, they clearly just don't want to".

A separate parent highlighted that policies appear "school dependent". She noted: "Ours are allowed to wear PE kits, air conditioning, have ice lollies and water play, relaxed learning, and water breaks every 10 mins! Outside in the shade for 5 minutes, and back in to the air con, allowed to stand up and stretch their legs! Couldn't ask for more!"

So, should educational establishments adapt their policies during extreme heat? We'd love to hear your views in the comments below.
