When it comes to her outfits, Kate Middleton has been known to put plenty of thought into the pieces she chooses. And we don’t just mean making sure her handbag matches her outfit or whether her shoes are right for the occasion.

From subtle nods to Princess Diana through her jewellery, to wearing certain colours with deep meaning behind them on special occasions, Kate has been known to convey messages through her outfit choices. And her most recent dress was no exception, with Kate choosing one of her favourite designers at a very important time.

Whilst cheering on Prince William at the DMMI Royal Charity Polo Cup last week, Kate wore a gingham midi dress from Temperley London – just days after founder Alice Temperley announced she was stepping away from the brand. Temperley London has played an important role in Princess Kate’s royal wardrobe ever since she first joined the family, with Kate wearing a white dress from the brand for her first ever Wimbledon appearance in 2011.

However, the last time she wore a dress from Temperley was back in 2017, making her decision to wear the dress just after the announcement particularly meaningful. The gingham Stirling dress is also from a past season, meaning Kate has most likely had the dress on rotation in her everyday wardrobe for a while.

The dress itself is also a great example of how to nail a cool, comfortable feel whilst still looking polished and put together for summer events. It’s fitted bodice and flowing midi skirt make it look sophisticated without being stuffy, and the oversized gingham print adds a bit of fun.

As it is an older design, Kate’s exact dress has of course long since sold out – although you might get lucky on resale sites. However if you want to replicate her look for your next summer event, there are some other great options around that will give you a Kate-worthy look for less.

H&M Flared-Skirt Midi Dress

This may be the most similar to Kate’s dress in terms of design, with a fitted bodice that creates a flattering shape and a flowing midi skirt for that effortless, elegant look. It also has a subtle luxe-look to it, despite the fact the price tag comes in at just £37.99.

Princess Polly Cartmel Seersucker Square Neck Maxi Dress

Bridging the gap between formal and casual, this on-sale gingham dress is versatile enough to be one of your wardrobe’s hardest workers. Wear it with ballet flats and a tote bag for a relaxed, every day feel, or elevate it with kitten heels and a clutch for formal occasions.

M&S Linen Rich Printed Scoop Neck Corset Dress

If you want a version of Kate’s dress that you can wear every day, this Marks & Spencer version is ideal. Made with a slightly more relaxed, casual feel and 55% linen, it’s a breathable, floaty pick that you can wear on repeat so you’ll get plenty of cost-per-wear from the £50 price tag.
