The Step Up and Magic Mike star has revealed all on what he did to lose over five stone of weight for a film role
Channing Tatum has spoken openly about one of the most dramatic physical transformations of his career - revealing that a strict daily routine played a major part in his weight loss for a movie role.
The Magic Mike and Step Up star explained that, when he’s filming, the structure of set life makes it far easier for him to stick to a plan, and it was that consistency that helped him achieve such a big change.
In a recent interview, the 46-year-old actor said the biggest shift he made was pushing back his first meal of the day until around 3pm. He then kept things simple with two small meals, typically built around meat and vegetables, and paired the approach with long sessions of light cardio.
Channing also admitted that, earlier in his career, his body seemed to respond faster when he needed to gain or lose weight for work. But these extreme changes have started to feel tougher as he gets older.
“I used to be able to lose weight really quickly. I could fluctuate almost 25 to 30 pounds in three weeks,” he said.

He shared that he was roughly 245lb while filming one project that required a more relaxed “dad bod” look. Later, he slimmed down to about 172lb for a different role - a drop of around 73lb, which works out at just over five stone.
“I only planned to get down to like 185,” he said, adding that once he settled into the rhythm of filming, sticking to a routine became more manageable. “My life in general isn’t very consistent,” he added, explaining that the predictability of being on set helped him follow the same pattern day after day.
Describing his routine, Channing said: “I was fasting from when I woke up to about 2pm or 3pm every day. Then I’d have two small meals of meat and vegetables and that was sort of just my plan, and just light, long, cardio."
The plan he described falls under intermittent fasting, where food is eaten within a set time window rather than spread across the day. The NHS notes that intermittent fasting may help some people lose weight because it can reduce overall calorie intake. However, it also stresses that long-term results depend on maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise, rather than relying on one particular method.
A review published in the New England Journal of Medicine has also suggested intermittent fasting can be effective for some adults, although researchers have concluded it isn’t typically more effective than other calorie-controlled diets when the same overall calories are consumed.
Channing’s comments also echo advice previously shared by his personal chef and nutritionist, Aline Fiuza. Speaking to People, she said the actor often begins a transformation phase by fasting before shifting into an intermittent fasting routine, usually eating between around 1pm and 6pm or 7pm.
Fiuza added that his meals tend to focus on vegetables, animal protein, nuts and seeds, and that his diet is adjusted depending on what each role demands physically. She also said he gradually returns to three meals a day as filming continues.
Earlier this year, Channing suggested he may be done with major weight swings. In an Instagram post, he thanked his trainer and chef, but said he doesn’t plan to do any more “fat roles”, adding that the process is now “too hard on the body” — and harder to shift.
