Spanning 1.1 million sq ft, the Los Angeles Clippers’ new home builds upon decades of stadium construction, bringing Inglewood, Calif., a sustainable, durable and technologically advanced venue.

A limited site and nearby airspace required a carefully choreographed construction effort. The stadium’s 2,784-ton roof is supported by seven 120-ton primary trusses, the steel for which was erected from within the bowl using lattice boom crawler cranes instead of tower cranes.

On the outside, a 2,791-ton diagrid structural steel frame clad in PTFE and ETFE panels gives Intuit Dome its iconic look, which was inspired by a basketball net.

“On the construction side, the technology really sets this building apart, and it [is] the most sophisticated of any NBA arena,” says Craig Bojda, vice president at AECOM Hunt. “From the frictionless commerce within the markets and bars, to the technology at every spectator seat, the Clippers have made very conscious decisions to give their fans the best experience in the NBA.”

That includes a 360˚ sound system as well as an industry-first video display, the Halo, a 27-ft high, continuous wrap-around 4K LED screen fixed to the main trusses.

“The construction team worked with technology partners early in the preconstruction process to include space, power and raceway requirements for technology advancements early in the project design and construction sequencing,” says Rames Sundaram, a project executive with AECOM Hunt. “We packaged all technology systems for phased procurement, planning for incorporation of the latest technologies while still meeting the schedule goals.”

In addition to its high-tech features, the Intuit Dome is the first NBA stadium to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The all-electric facility boasts 2 MW of rooftop solar panels and 11 MW of battery storage.
