Giants will keep ‘all options on the table' with Luis Arraez, Buster Posey says

The Giants and the 2026 MLB trade deadline are approaching a real crossroads, and Buster Posey is not ready to say definitively whether trading or extending Luis Arraez is the answer.
The Giants president of baseball operations joined KNBR’s “Murph & Markus” and was asked about the fan-favorite second baseman, with the Aug. 3 deadline looming and Arraez playing out the final months of his one-year deal.
“I understand that sentiment from Giants fans, and I think he’s been such a positive person and teammate in the clubhouse that we wouldn’t be prudent if we didn’t at least consider the option of extending him or bringing him back,” Posey said. “But unfortunately we are not playing the type of baseball that we need to play right now, so we’ve got to keep all options on the table.”
Posey is well aware that trading Arraez could divide a fan base that has fallen for the three-time batting champion — and not just for what he does at the plate. Arraez has quietly turned himself into one of the better defensive second basemen in the league this season, a genuine transformation with the help of Giants infield coach Ron Washington, after defense was long considered the weakest part of his game.
Arraez is hitting .330 this season with 35 RBI, and he arrived in San Francisco on a one-year, $12 million deal after stops with the Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres — meaning a trade this summer would mark the third time in his career he has been dealt.
“Unfortunately, we’re in a position where we do have to look to try and improve the organization, our depth, our big league roster, the minors where we can,” Posey said. “Arraez is an interesting one just because he’s a unique talent. The guy won three batting titles already, hitting .330-whatever he is this year. But we’re 41 and 55, so we’re going to have to look at all options to try to get better going forward.”
The Giants enter the deadline weighed down by several heavy contracts beyond Arraez — Matt Chapman is signed through 2030, and Willy Adames and Rafael Devers still are owed a combined $360 million between them. Whether moving Arraez actually solves anything, or whether one of those larger contracts becomes the real trade chip, remains to be seen.
Posey has real decisions ahead of him. Whatever direction the Giants take by Aug. 3 will say plenty about how he views the next phase of a rebuild that is now fully his own.
