When Peter Duncan arrived at the politics department of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, now Aberystwyth University, in the 1980s there was a civil war taking place in the Labour Club between adherents of the Militant Tendency and supporters of the orthodox Labour left.His pamphlet Paved With Good Intentions: The Politics of Militant was a characteristically thorough, reasoned demolition of that organisation’s cult-like behaviour, but also an attempt to contribute to an open pluralistic Labour party of the sort that many of us hoped would emerge.
