Rory McIlroy believes the golfing calendar could benefit from a more evenly distributed major season.
Having claimed the first major of the year at the Masters in April , McIlroy is now gearing up for the final one, the Open, at Royal Birkdale this week.
The flagship tournaments became increasingly bunched together in 2019 when the US PGA Championship shifted from its traditional August slot to May.
McIlroy, currently ranked second in the world, feels the change can work in favour of players who are in good form, but questions whether it truly serves the sport as a whole.
The Northern Irishman said: "I guess I see pros and cons in both. I'd like to see the major season spread out a little bit longer.
"The Masters is always going to have the build-up but I think then US PGA into US Open, US Open into here, it just seems like it's very, very quick.
"From a player perspective, if you get on a bit of a run, it's nice to be sort of playing well and go from one straight into the next.
"But for the sport as a whole and for, I guess, the general interest in the game, obviously I can see the positives in that major season being stretched out a little bit longer."
McIlroy, who stepped down from the PGA Tour's policy board three years ago, admits he is "done with" administrative matters and doubts his views will carry much weight.
He said: "I feel like I would certainly voice it – but I don't think it's going to really change anything."
World number one Scottie Scheffler and two-time major winner Jon Rahm are said to share McIlroy's sentiments. Scheffler said: "The season for us is getting quicker and quicker. Maybe there could be more of a break."
Rahm echoed the sentiment, saying: "If you're playing good golf, it's always going to benefit you. As far as spectators go, I think us having some more time in between may be better. You could make an argument for either one."
