Greenwich Entertainment has released the official U.S. trailer for “Jinsei,” a new anime film from director Ryuya Suzuki.

A rare independent anime film, “Jinsei” (which translates to life in Japanese) is the debut feature of director Ryuya Suzuki — who wrote, directed, edited, and entirely hand-drew the film himself. The movie is a surreal story about the life of a hero (voiced by professional rapper Ace Cool) who, in his youth, becomes a J-pop idol. Through a surreal odyssey that spans a century, the hero searches for his identity and navigates the highs and lows of fame and notoriety.

The film’s voice cast also includes Taketo Tanaka, Shohei Uno, Tsubaki Nekoze, Remi Tyon, Eri Kamataki, Ryotaro Nishino, Ayumu Nakajima, Katsuya Maiguma, Miho Ohashi, and Kanji Tsuda. Based on the trailer, the film has a limited animation style reminiscent of Adult Swim shows more than most traditional anime films.

The logline for the film reads: “Our hero (voiced by rapper Ace Cool), called by a different name in each chapter of his life, becomes a J-pop idol, an outcast, a leader, and an oracle in this hundred-year chronicle spanning the past, present, and future. Through a chance encounter with a transfer student, he trains to become an idol, starting his search for self-identity and a journey toward greatness beyond superstardom. Written, directed, edited, and entirely hand-drawn by newcomer Ryuya Suzuki over 18 months, ‘Jinsei’ (meaning ‘life’ in Japanese) is an anime tour-de-force that announces Suzuki to the world as a bold new talent in independent animation.”

“Jinsei” originally premiered at the 2025 Annecy Film Festival, where it played in the Contrechamp section of the festival. The film also ran at the Tokyo International Film Festival. “Jinsei” will have its U.S premiere at the IFC Center on June 5. The following week, it will expand nationwide on June 12.

Other than “Jinsei,” this spring will also see the release of “Labryinth,” another feature-length anime film about a high school student who becomes a pop idol. That film, from director Shoji Kawamori, will be released in theaters for two nights only, on May 10 and 11.
