A health alert issued in New York could have an impact on Sunday's World Cup final
FIFA could be forced into a late change ahead of Sunday's World Cup final after a health alert was issued overnight.
Officials in New York and New Jersey have issued an air quality health alert because of wildfire smoke, just days before the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The haze caused by Canadian wildfires has blanketed the New York region, prompting officials to urge residents to stay indoors if possible.
The smoke-filled skies have already hindered one football match.
The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) went ahead on Wednesday with a match between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit in front of a record crowd at Citi Field in Queens.

However, the air quality index (AQI) meant players were mandated to take two breaks per half according to NWSL policy.
Should the AQI sit between 100 and 150, it triggers one hydration break per half. If the AQI reads between 150 and 180, then two breaks are mandatory.
Above 180 is when delays and cancellations come into effect.
Any AQI over 151 is considered "unhealthy" by the US government. The AQI reading ahead of kick-off for this particular match was 171.
Afterwards, Washington Spirit's Trinity Rodman said they shouldn't have played.
"Not to make excuses at all, but I think on both sides we were all like, 'another break, another break, another break'," said Rodman.
“If we have to have a hydration break every 15 minutes, then we shouldn’t be playing the game, and that’s my opinion. But at the end of the day, there’s 40,000 people. It’s a whole event, so it’s really tough. It’s just a really hard situation for everyone to work around.”
On Thursday, the Major League Soccer match between Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps was postponed because of poor air quality conditions in the Chicago area.
Former Bayern Munich and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski was due to make his debut for Chicago.
Contractor Dan Edgar said his daughter Kaitlynn was practising at New York New Jersey Stadium on Thursday, where she will be dancing and performing for the final.
"She's texting me that it's bad out there," he said. "It's hard to dance, she says you can feel the air, it's heavy."
Conditions deteriorated just before Spain arrived in New Jersey on Wednesday, having booked their place in the World Cup final with victory over France in Texas the previous day.
Spain trained outdoors on Thursday, with Argentina set to do the same on Friday. As yet, there's no indication either side has been affected..
However, were FIFA forced to go down the route of two breaks at the 80,000 open-air New York New Jersey Stadium, it would only serve to elongate an already bloated final.
The governing body is already facing fresh accusations of hypocrisy after plans emerged to extend the World Cup final half-time break beyond the maximum 15-minute length permitted under the Laws of the Game.
The governing body is expected to stage a Super Bowl-style half-time show at Sunday's World Cup final in New York/New Jersey, with broadcasters ITV and the BBC anticipating the interval will last around 30 minutes, the Times report.
However, the Laws of the Game state that the half-time interval "must not exceed 15 minutes" – a limit set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which rejected a proposal to extend the break to 25 minutes in 2021 because of concerns over player welfare and safety.
FIFA has already ignored that restriction once before, with last year's Club World Cup in the US final featuring a 25-minute interval to accommodate entertainment, and it has repeatedly declined to confirm how long the World Cup final break will last.
While a normal match would normally take around 105 minutes including half-time, the World Cup final - were they to be two breaks and the lengthy interval - could swell to around 132 minutes.
Were the match to go to extra-time and penalties, it could edge towards three hours long.
