At a time when games and video game hardware are at their most expensive ever, the act of acquiring games is becoming too easy.

. People struggle to have affordable healthcare, groceries necessary for survival, and decent housing. Still, it has never been easier to get little treats, as companies like Amazon and DoorDash have been successfully pushing to make their employees’ lives miserable just so they can bring you stuff you don’t really need. It’s a great way to trick our minds into forgetting the big shadow-shaped future ahead of us all.

For a long time, video game companies have had a more employee-friendly way of facilitating things by letting you download games right away. But do you know how much cooler life was before that? Before we won the war on “friction” and made life so much more uneventful for everyone?

In this context, “friction” describes the small-but-healthy challenge that I believe most good things in life should come with. Big corps imagined we wanted to remove all challenges from life, when we actually like those; we just don’t like impossible odds. So many will never know just how cool trying to find a rare game can be. The thrill of finding something really cheap with evocative cover art in the bargain bin? Priceless.

Sometimes, the cool art combined with the name of Square Enix at the height of Final Fantasy’s power tricks you into buying one of the worst games of all time for full price, but the lesson about judging games by their cover is well worth the $50—especially when it’s your parents’ money.

Everyone remembers their favorite games, but unlike many people nowadays, millennials also remember the quests they had to go through to get them. I remember the unparalleled joy of finding a copy of Vagrant Story after weeks of searching. Same with getting to the store to buy Metal Gear Solid 2 on launch day, not seeing it on the shelves, then being pulled aside by the store owner to tell me not to worry, because they’d set a few copies aside for customers they knew would be coming.

Even the “bad” memories I have from those times were actually good. I remember braving a heat wave to get Final Fantasy X on release day, only to learn its delivery had been delayed countrywide for three more days. Worse, I remember how the PS2 bundle that came with FFX arrived on time, so I also remember hopelessly staring at a huge box containing the game I wanted, knowing full well not even I was dumb enough to shell out $400 for it. Those were the longest three days of my life, but ever since beating Final Fantasy X—and not liking it all that much, oops—I can’t help but laugh whenever I remember that despair-filled weekend.

Nowadays, ask anyone what it was like getting a game. They’ll tell you that they just pressed a few buttons, and that you’re weird for asking that kind of stuff. The closest thing to an adventure you can experience when getting digital goods is repeatedly attempting to input the credit card data with your fingers covered in Doritos grease. That’s not the kind of friction anybody wants to go through or hear about.

And sure, this can read just like gatekeeping to many. Being from a small town, I was incredibly fortunate to live within walking distance of a few stores. And, when the bounty was too rare, I could sometimes pester my parents to take me to the big city. Those trips also spawned some of my favorite video game memories.

The video below isn’t mine, but I’ve lived through similar moments—jolts that the brains raised in the digital-only era might never experience, and I feel for them.

Many people don’t own a vehicle or might have health issues that prevent them from moving in one way or another. It’s also possible that they don’t care for creating such memories. They also might not have the space required to store a collection of disc-based media. There are plenty of reasons why digital games deserve their place. What completely sucks, however, is Sony’s current silence on whether it’ll expand the PSN reach to the over 100 regions where people will be left without any way to acquire games, should it unceremoniously discontinue disc media.

Physical and digital have coexisted for the longest time, and it’s been fantastic. Having options is great, but so is having a bit of friction, a bit of a challenge, even if it doesn’t go beyond beating the analysis paralysis of deciding whether you want to buy the game in disc or digital format.
