A dad was attacked as he lay unconscious after trying to save his daughter from her abusive partner. Adam Johnson had pushed a woman down the stairs before launching an attack on the man who tried to help her.
After hitting him from behind and causing him to lose consciousness, Johnson kicked and stood on the man's chest during the incident in Thornaby. The victim said the incident has had a lasting imapact and has made "even simple tasks difficult to complete".
Teesside Crown Court heard that on April 30 this year Johnson pushed his partner down the stairs. The victim, who is no longer with Johnson, had decided to leave the property after he took her phone charger, leaving her unable to contact anyone. He had been accusing her of cheating for several months before the incident.
Kathryn Wetherley, prosecuting, told the court: "[The victim] stated that she fell from the top of the stairs to the bottom, with enough force that the defendant also fell with her."
Ms Wetherley said the woman was able to get up and leave the house but was followed by Johnson. The court heard that he called the woman's dad and asked him to pick her up because she was "kicking off".
As he approached the property, he saw Johnson and his daughter at a nearby phone box. They both got into the car and returned to the house. But later, as the woman returned to the car with her dad, Johnson ran towards the dad and hit him from behind, causing him to fall to the floor and lose consciousness.
Ms Wetherley added: "[The woman] saw the defendant assault her father whilst he was unconscious by kicking him to his head and his ribs as wall as standing on his chest. [He] regained consciousness and attempted to get to his feet.
"As he did he saw the defendant swing further punches at him, which he was able to avoid. [The man] tried to hit back at the defendant with [his daughter] intervening.
"But the defendant was able to overpower her, where he forced her to the ground. Neighbours were alerted to the ongoing disturbance and saw [the man] in the front garden of the property with blood on his head and hands. They were able to contact the police."
In a victim impact statement read out in court the woman said: "Being pushed down the stairs was a frightening experience and I genuinely feared for my safety at the time. The fact that this happened in my own home, where I should feel safe, has had a lasting impact on me.
"I have struggled emotionally since the incident and feel anxious and on edge, particularly in my own home when I am alone. I am constantly worried that Johnson may return or try to contact me again."
She added: "Seeing my father being attacked was also extremely traumatic. I felt helpless watching him being punched, kicked and stood on as I was unable to stop it.
"This has caused me ongoing distress and I feel guilty that he was injured whilst trying to help me."
A victim impact statement from her dad said: "Since the assault I have been struggling both physically and emotionally. I am in constant pain as a result of my injuries. This pain affects my day-to-day life and makes even simple tasks difficult to complete."
Johnson, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating. The 37-year-old, who has three previous convictions for five offences, including wounding with intent, appeared in court via video link from HMP Holme House to be sentenced on Monday.
Judge Jonathan Carroll sentenced him to 30 months in prison, with a 20 month extended licence. Michele Turner, defending, said that Johnson had suffered a deterioration in his mental health and had failed to spot the warning signs. She added that prior to the incident he had managed to stay out of trouble for a decade.
