One of the most useful pieces of software on my computer is the Disk Defragmenter that comes with Windows. I use it regularly to keep my hard drives in tip-top condition. But what if you've got a hard drive that's so badly fragmented that the standard Windows Disk Defragmenter can't fix it? What if you've got a RAID array, or a non-Windows file system? That's where a third-party defragging program comes in handy. One such program is Diskeeper 7 Pro, from Diskeeper Corporation. I've been using Diskeeper 7 Pro for a while, and it's done a great job of keeping my hard drives in peak condition. As you'd expect from a commercial defragging utility, Diskeeper 7 Pro has a lot more features and capabilities than the free Windows Disk Defragmenter. It can handle highly fragmented drives, RAID arrays, non-Windows file systems, and even defrags the Master File Table. It also has some clever features for power users, like the ability to schedule regular defrags and display a detailed graphical analysis of fragmentation levels. For the most part, Diskeeper 7 Pro just works. You fire it up, click a button, and it gets on with the job of defragging your drives. But there are a few neat tricks up its sleeve too. For example, it can actually defrag your system files while Windows is running - something the Windows Disk Defragmenter can't do. This makes it much easier to keep your system in good shape, since you don't have to reboot into a special pre-boot environment. Diskeeper also has some fairly sophisticated scheduling options, so you can set it to run automatically on a regular basis (like every weekend) without having to remember to do it yourself. It can even wake up a sleeping or hibernating computer to run a scheduled defrag. The graphical display of fragmentation levels is a particularly nice touch. It gives you a detailed view of how your drives are laid out and where the fragmentation is occurring. This can be really useful for diagnosing and troubleshooting disk-related performance issues. My only real gripe with Diskeeper 7 Pro is the interface. It's not terrible, but it does feel a bit old-fashioned and clunky compared to the slick look of Windows XP. But it's functional, and gets the job done. Overall, Diskeeper 7 Pro is a great piece of software that should be part of any power user's toolkit. The ability to defrag system files on-the-fly, handle complex and highly-fragmented drives, and provide detailed fragmentation analysis make it well worth the price of admission. Recommended.
