Protesters descended on Sen. Susan Collins’ Biddeford office Monday following a deadly shooting that authorities said involved federal immigration agents.

Dozens of people crowded the entryway of the Main St. office Monday afternoon shouting “Vote her out!” On the street, others carried signs reading, “NO ICE” and “Melt ICE.”

Collins, a five-time Republican incumbent, is currently seeking reelection. She has faced criticism from Maine Democrats in recent weeks for her June vote in favor of a $70 billion funding bill to support Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“The shooting in Biddeford requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened,” Collins said in a written statement. “It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site, and the FBI is investigating.”

Later, Collins’ office defended the senator’s vote for ICE funding in a statement, noting the money came with additional accountability measures for agents. These included $20 million for expanded use of body-worn cameras, $2 million for de-escalation training, and $20 million for increased oversight of detention facilities, her office noted.

“The work that ICE and Border Patrol do goes far beyond immigration enforcement to help protect our country. More than a quarter of ICE’s annual appropriated budget is for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which is tasked with combating cartels, human smuggling, child exploitation, forced labor, and investigating international financial crimes,” a Collins spokesperson said. “In Maine, Border Patrol does critical work to prevent dangerous and illegal weapons, drugs, and other contraband from entering our country.”

However, the officers who shot the 26-year-old Colombian man in Biddeford were not wearing body-worn cameras, according to Sen. Angus King, who spoke with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin Monday.

Also, DHS’ non-immigration enforcement personal have been redirected en masse in the past under Trump to domestic immigration enforcement, according to reporting from the libertarian CATO institute.

Neighbors told the Press Herald that the victim was Joan Sebastian Guerrero, though authorities have not released his identity.

The Maine attorney general’s office said the incident happened as an “enforcement operation related to a final order of removal” was being conducted and that the “subject attempted to flee in a vehicle.” Biddeford police confirmed that ICE was involved.

The protest outside Collins’ office was part of a larger demonstration about the shooting.

Around noon, about two dozen protesters marched into Collins’ office, but were shooed out minutes later as police arrived.

“This is your fault Susan!” one man shouted.

“You’re a fascist!” another person yelled at the officers who got in the protesters’ way.

The crowd later marched back towards Mechanics Park after chanting at and heckling the officers.

“No more hate, no more fear!” crowd leaders shouted as they meandered down the road.

“Immigrants are welcome here!” the crowd responded.
