New data from a study of young Australians shows most 19-24 year-olds are engaging with democracy differently than other generations who may have taken political party membership.

Research by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) shows that while only 1% of young people report regular involvement with a political party, younger citizens are finding other ways to take up the issues they care about.
A total of 41% of more than 4,400 young people interviewed across two cohorts, aged 19-20 and 23-24 years, reported expressing their political opinions in the last five years.
About 82% of this group said they had signed an online petition, and nearly a third (31%) reported taking part in a protest or demonstration.
