A selection of ready-made pasta dishes have been recalled over fears they are contaminated with deadly bacteria. 

Idaho-based Albertsons Companies has voluntarily recalled five store-made deli items containing bowtie pasta that were found to possibly be contaminated with listeria, a type of bacteria that causes severe diarrhea and muscle aches.

The affected pasta was produced by Nate's Fine Foods in California, which has been implicated in a listeria outbreak that has killed four people and hospitalized 19. 

No illnesses have been tied specifically to the Albertsons products, but they have been taken off the shelves in 15 states out of an abundance of caution. 

The recall includes five bowtie pasta salad meals sold at the following stores: Albertsons, Albertsons Market, Amigos, Andronico's Community Markets, Carrs-Safeway, Eagle, Pak 'N Save, Pavilions, Market Street, Randalls, Safeway, Tom Thumb and Vons.

States affected by the recall include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. 

Products had 'sell by' dates ranging from September 8, 2025, to September 29, 2025.

The original recall, announced earlier this week, included frozen pasta meals sold at Walmart, Trader Joe's and Kroger.

The FDA urged consumers who have purchased affected items to dispose of them or return them to a local store for a full refund. 

Those who purchased the recalled products should also use 'extra vigilance' in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces that may have come into contact with them over fears of cross-contamination.  

Listeria, also called Listeriosis, is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

It can be found in moist environments, soil, water, decaying vegetation and animals, and can survive refrigeration and other food preservation measures. 

Many foods can harbor the bug, but it is usually found in unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses and ready-to-eat foods, such as pre-packed sandwiches. Cooked shellfish, cured meats and fish, including sushi and pre-cut fruit, are also a risk.

Most people who eat food contaminated with Listeria will not become seriously ill. 

But in some cases, it can cause confusion and seizures, miscarriages among pregnant women, and even death. 

In the original recall, one pregnancy-associated illness resulted in fetal death.  

This can happen when the infection spreads beyond the gut and affects the central nervous system, which can lead to numbness and seizures. 

The CDC estimates 1,600 Americans become infected with listeria every year, and about 260 die.
