One of Waikiki's last clothing stores announced it will shut its doors for the last time - and locals are heartbroken. 

The Nordstrom Rack in Waikiki, Hawaii, will permanently shut on July 27, bringing an end to its 10-year run in one of the state's busiest shopping districts.  

The two-story outlet inside the Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach first welcomed customers in 2016 and quickly became a favorite stop for both locals and tourists searching for discounted clothing, shoes and accessories.

The closure will affect 34 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing submitted by the Seattle-based retailer. 

Some workers will shuffle to other Nordstrom storefronts, although it has not disclosed how many transfers will be available. Nordstrom also confirmed it provided the required notice to affected workers. 

'Certain employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Nordstrom locations,' the file states. 'We have not yet determined who will be offered these opportunities.'

The company has not publicly said why the Waikiki location is being shuttered.

The Waikiki store's closure leaves Hawaii with one remaining Nordstrom Rack at Ward Village Shops, while the company's full-line Nordstrom department store at Ala Moana Center will continue operating.

News of the shutdown has sparked disappointment among loyal customers, many of whom took to social media to share their frustration.

'It's the one place I go to shop in Waikiki,' one shopper wrote on Facebook. 'No comparison to Ross. I shop at Ross too, but selection and quality is different. Sad that so many stores and restaurants are closing.'

Another added that they 'love' going to this Nordstrom Rack. 

'Always go every time I'm in Waikiki,' they wrote. 

'How sad,' another commenter added. 'I've worked here for many years. They always have great sales and good quality items. Nordstrom is a great company to work.'

The move comes as retailers across the country continue to grapple with mounting operating costs, changing consumer shopping habits and fierce competition from online rivals. 

Even other Nordstrom locations have closed their doors in recent years. One location in San Francisco closed in August 2023, citing the city's rise in crime, homelessness, and public drug use. 

'It's half of the mall that is no longer going to be here. I do think it might change the businesses. You can already see it. It's unfortunate,' a Nordstrom employee said at the time. 

The ongoing retail bloodbath saw Macy's announce earlier this year that it would close 14 'underproductive' stores across 12 states, and luxury department store Saks Global Group filed for bankruptcy, marking one of the largest retail failures since the pandemic.

Data shared with Daily Mail earlier this year shows 8,234 US stores permanently closed in 2025 - a staggering figure that marks a fresh blow to brick-and-mortar retail.

That's 12 percent more than the previous year's total of 7,325 closures, according to Coresight Research, and the highest number ever recorded.

As of 2023, Nordstrom operates 360 stores in the US, including 93 Nordstrom stores and 258 Nordstrom Racks.
