Ground stops were issued for flights to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday as thunderstorms rolled through the area.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop around 4:45 p.m. and it continued until 6 p.m. when it was allowed to expire.
A second ground stop was issued for flights to O’Hare around 7:30 p.m. that was originally set to continue until 8:45 p.m. before being extended to 10 p.m.
There is also a medium probability the ground stop could be extended again.
As of 6 p.m., flights to O’Hare were also delayed an average of almost 3 hours.
Flights departing from O’Hare were also impacted by the storms, with a 30-minute delay on average as of 5:30 p.m.
There was no impact to flights in or out of Midway Airport as of 8 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for most of the Chicago area until 10 p.m., officials said.
The biggest threats with the storms will be damaging wind gusts and hail, “however, can’t rule out an isolated tornado either,” Storm Team 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.
