A Merseyside dad has invested a six-figure sum into his latest business venture, and says he believes the current hype alone shows it will be worth it. Callum Webb, originally from Stockbridge Village and now living in Woolton, has spent the past 10 months quietly building Forma Padel, a new performance clothing brand for players.
The dad-of-two, who also co-founded the fitness app POW8R, plans to officially launch the brand later this year after deliberately keeping details under wraps to build anticipation. The first collection will include caps, tops, shorts, socks and jackets, with Callum personally testing every sample on court before signing it off.
A regular at Ignite Padel, he said every item has gone through months of wear testing before making the final cut. Despite the brand having yet to post a single Instagram photo or launching any products, at the time of writing it has an impressive 19,500 followers to its name.
Callum told the ECHO: "I didn't want to give too much away too soon. Over the next couple of weeks we'll start releasing more founder-led content, but at its heart we're a padel clothing brand focused on performance apparel.
"Every sample gets tested properly. I'll play or train in it because it's not just about how the product looks – it's about how it performs when you're moving, how it deals with sweat and how it stands up after being washed.
"We've had samples that looked great but didn't hold up, so we've gone back and changed them. Those little details make all the difference. We've already been approached by padel centres and retailers, which is crazy because nobody has even seen the full product range yet.
"They're just going off the branding and some of the content I've shared on my own personal account. We've decided to stay direct-to-consumer because we want the brand to have an exclusive feel. We don't want people to be able to buy it everywhere."
The racket sport has taken Merseyside by storm, with padel courts popping up across the region and plenty more still in the pipeline. For anyone who hasn't heard of it, padel is a fast-paced racket sport which combines elements of both squash and tennis. The sport has a long list of Scouse celebrity fans, including Steven Gerrard, John Aldridge and Paddy Pimblett, who've all been spotted on court.
Callum said: "The demand and engagement I've seen for this has been unlike anything I've experienced. It really shows just how much interest there is in padel. I think Liverpool is a really competitive city.
“Football is massive here and we're an active city, so I can understand why padel has taken off. But it's not just Liverpool. I've still never met anyone who's tried padel and said they didn't enjoy it.
"The biggest reason it's become so popular is because it's so easy to pick up. Unlike sports such as golf or tennis, you don't need loads of technique before you can enjoy yourself. You can walk into a padel centre and see people of all ages and abilities playing together. Anybody can play.
"I don't think padel is a trend – I think it's here to stay. A lot of people hate going to the gym because it feels like a chore, but with padel you can burn more than 1,000 calories without it feeling like exercise. I've got friends who've lost six or seven stone through playing because they've finally found a way of exercising that they genuinely enjoy."
Forma Padel had originally been due to launch in August, but Callum delayed the release to perfect the products. He said given the amount of time and money that has been spent, he would rather push it back until everything was “perfect”.
He said: “I didn't start this business to be 'good enough'. I've invested a six-figure sum into it and I'm all in. You only get one chance with a customer. If someone buys from you once and they're disappointed, they probably won't come back, so the business is built on product quality before anything else.
“We’re so close to launching but honestly I don't think it's hit me yet. People keep telling me how exciting it is and how good everything looks, but when you're so deep into something you don't really stop to think about it. I'm just focused on making sure everything is right for launch.
"My partner always says my worst trait is that I never give myself any credit because I'm always thinking about what's next and it’s the same with this.”
