Merseyrail are set to make changes to several services this week. The 154th Open Championship has returned to Royal Birkdale for the 11th time, with the final round scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 19. Merseyrail is set to run more frequent services for spectators heading to the event.
The Open is one of the four major championships in men's golf, alongside the Masters, the PGA Championship and the US Open. Local golfer Tommy Fleetwood, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, and American world number one Scottie Scheffler are among the stars of the fairway taking part.
The ECHO has rounded up some of the changes that passengers should be aware of if they are using the service this week.
Liverpool and Hillside: Between Thursday, July 16 and Saturday, July 18, there will be a 20-minute service which will run between Hillside and Liverpool Central/Moorfields stations. This will increase to a 10-minute service at the busiest times:
Some trains will call at all stations, while others will run express, calling at: Sandhills, Waterloo, Hall Road and Formby only.

For passengers travelling to the golf from anywhere on the Wirral line, the easiest way is to change at Moorfields station and get on a Southport bound train to Hillside, according to the Merseyrail website.
Southport and Hillside: From Thursday, July 16 to Saturday, July 18, a 20-minute service will run between Southport and Hillside stations. This will increase to a 10-minute service at the busiest times:

Southport and Hunts Cross lines: There will be an amended timetable until Wednesday, July 15. Between Thursday, July 16 and Saturday, July 18, a 20-minute service will run throughout the day. This will be a 40-minute service for anyone using Cressington station.
On Sunday, July 19, a 20-minute service will run from the start of service until approximately 8.30pm, then a 40-minute service will run until the end of service. For anyone using Cressington station, a 40-minute service will run throughout the day.
Ormskirk line: There will be a 20-minute service throughout the day from Thursday, July 16 to Saturday, July 18. There will then be a 40-minute service on Sunday, July 19. During this time there will be no direct services between Ormskirk and Hunts Cross, passengers can change trains at Moorfields or Liverpool Central.
Headbolt Lane line: There will be a 20-minute service between Thursday, July 16 and Saturday, July 18. On Sunday, July 19, there will be up to two trains an hour through the day. Please check before you travel using the Merseyrail website or app.
Wirral Line: Chester and Ellesmere Port line trains will run to an amended timetable, arrival and departure times will be slightly different to the normal timetable. This will take place between Thursday, July 16 and Sunday, July 19.
