Knox and Vivienne turned 18 this July, making all six children legal adults and lifting the court restrictions that kept Jolie in Los Angeles. The only thing tying her to the city now is the Los Feliz mansion she listed in May, which still hasn’t sold.

Angelina Jolie is free to leave the United States, and she has a pair of birthdays to thank for it.

Knox and Vivienne were the last of her kids still under 18. Now that they’re adults, the custody and guardianship terms from her long divorce from Brad Pitt expire, so moving abroad no longer needs a court’s approval or Pitt’s. Her reasons are ones she’s said out loud before: more privacy for the family, deep roots in Cambodia, and a growing sense that she doesn’t recognize the country she grew up in.

Maddox is 24, Pax 22, Zahara 21, and Shiloh 20. The younger ones have kept the same low profile their parents once fought in court to protect. Vivienne, the most elusive of the 6, was spotted on a quiet Studio City errand run just 3 days before she turned 18. Shiloh spent the twins’ actual birthday on a low-key Whole Foods trip with her girlfriend, Keoni Rose. Knox has trained all summer at a local Muay Thai gym, and he’s started showing up in photo credits as “Knox Jolie,” dropping the Pitt that his older brother Pax still keeps.

What’s holding up the move now is the house. Jolie’s 1913 Los Feliz estate, the Cecil B. DeMille compound she bought in 2017 for about $25 million, hit the market near $30 million in May and still hasn’t sold. A cool luxury market has left her holding a mansion she’s ready to give up. She can travel freely today. She just can’t close the door behind her yet.
