These snaps don't lie

With turquoise seas, unmistakable whitewashed architecture and those iconic deep blue roofs, it's hardly surprising that the Greek islands are among some of the most photographed spots in the world.

In fact, there are thousands of Greek islands – though only around 200 are inhabited – each with its own distinctive landscapes, architecture and culture. Whether you're visiting the glamorous Mykonos or the more rustic Naxos, I'd defy any traveller not to whip out a camera and click away at the Aegean (or Ionian) vistas. Currently, the hashtag ‘Greek islands' has amounted to 4.5 million tags on Instagram – with the larger Cyclades spots racking up their own posts in the millions, too.

Granted, such beauty can amount to overcrowding in certain destinations – the often-ranked ‘most Instagrammable’ Santorini springs to mind, though there are plenty of quieter spots to explore – so the key to getting that perfect shot is often down to good timing and a bit of imagination in getting off the beaten track.

Either way, if landscape or architectural photography makes up the majority of your usual holiday camera roll, then the Greek islands are an undeniable must-visit. By analysing anonymous location data of photos uploaded to its platform, photo book and memory curation app Popsa has rounded up the most photographed Greek islands by travellers – here's the top 10 for any snapper's bucket list:

    1. Crete

Taking position number one is Crete, Greece’s largest and southern-most island – meaning there is much more opportunity to find lesser-known spots and secret coves to photograph. Here, the landscape changes from rugged cliffs to clear ocean and pretty greenery, making for picture-perfect Greek island vistas.

    2. Santorini

Second on the list is the ever-popular Santorini, best known for its deep blue roofs and whitewashed cave houses overlooking the Aegean Sea.

    3. Rhodes

With a beautiful medieval old town, tavernas aplenty and golden beaches for miles, Rhodes offers everything from natural wonders to ancient history.

    4. Corfu

Known as the ‘emerald island’ thanks to its lush green landscapes and millions of olive trees that stud the landscape, Corfu is a photographer's dream, particularly with the sparkling Ionian Sea as a backdrop.
