Jamie Carragher believes Gareth Southgate must sacrifice two start names from the England starting line-up to rejuvenate his team at Euro 2024.

England laboured to an unconvincing 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday, with Harry Kane's opener cancelled out by Morten Hjulmand's superb long-range strike.

The Three Lions struggled to create any meaningful chances, with Denmark largely viewed to have been the better side in Frankfurt.

England remain top of Group C and are on course for the last-16, but their disappointing displays have left more questions than answers.

Carragher, writing in The Telegraph, suggested Southgate's side reminded him of his England era where a manager attempted to fit all their star players into the same team.

JAMIE CARRAGHER's ENGLAND TEAM

England (4-3-3): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Gallagher, Rice, Bellingham; Saka, Kane, Gordon

The former England and Liverpool defender has argued Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden must be sacrificed for the benefit of the team.

Carragher suggested Conor Gallagher and Anthony Gordon must come into the side to give England more energy and help get the best out of Harry Kane and Declan Rice.

'Unfortunately, two of the best Premier League footballers – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden – will have to be sacrificed now,' Carragher wrote.

'The team’s set-up is not getting the best from them, or their team-mates.

'Introducing Alexander-Arnold into midfield in a major tournament was always a risk. It has not worked. The experiment ended with his early substitution against Denmark.

'Elsewhere in the side, nobody loves watching Foden more than me.

'But for England to come up with a system that works and complements everyone, he can’t operate in the starting XI with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane if they are all trying to occupy the same space and positions.'

Carragher believes the inclusion of Conor Gallagher, Adam Wharton or Kobbie Mainoo in midfield is an 'essential move' to add energy into the team.

He advocated for Gordon's inclusion by highlighting how Kane has performed best for England when supported by two pacey wide men.

The former Liverpool defender is not alone in suggesting England must make changes to starting line-up.

Roy Keane, speaking on ITV, insisted Alexander-Arnold 'is not up to' playing in central midfield.

Fellow pundit Ian Wright advocated for Wharton to be given the chance alongside Rice in midfield.

Wright had dismissed Southgate's claim that England are struggling to replace Kalvin Phillips in the centre of the pitch.
