Dylan Cease will be the American League All-Star starting pitcher.

The Blue Jays’ off-season gem of a free-agent signing was named to the post Sunday by American League (and Toronto Blue Jays) manager John Schneider.

He joins two-time All-Star starter Dave Stieb (1983 and ’84), 2009 All-Star starter Roy Halladay, and 2000 All-Star starter David Wells as the only Jays to have achieved this honour.

Cease’s ability to strike out opponents in bunches separates him from the vast majority of his pitching brethren. His 148 strikeouts at the break lead the majors, while his 2.56 ERA has him sitting third in the American League.

Through 17 starts, Cease has amassed a 6-4 record.

Better still, he’s coming off his most dominant start of the year when he came within three outs of what would have been the second no-hitter of his young career. Cease has a no-hitter on his resume from 2024 when he was with the San Diego Padres. He narrowly missed another in 2022.

That game, which ended in a 10-0 Jays victory last Wednesday, likely pushed Cease over the top in terms of the starting assignment. It didn’t hurt matters that his own manager was making the choice for the American League.

Cease signed a seven-year, $120-million free agent deal with the Jays in December.

This will mark his first All-Star appearance in his eighth year of his major league career.

Cease’s bid for the starting role was also bolstered by the withdrawal of Yankees starter Cam Schlittler, who has been the AL’s most dominant starter leading the league in ERA, WHIP and bWar. Schlittler opted out of pitching in the game earlier Sunday after making a start Saturday for the Yankees.

Perennial elite starters like Tarik Skubal, Gerrit Cole, Max Fried and Hunter Brown have been battling or are battling injuries and have not been able to perform to their traditional levels.

Cristopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Philles will start for the National League.
