Gujarat government on Thursday, announced a ₹500 crore allocation for creek development in Surat after Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the flood situation in the city and surrounding areas, where heavy rainfall over the past week led to widespread waterlogging, rescue operations and damage to property.

Chairing a high-level review meeting at Surat’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), Patel directed officials to prepare a comprehensive long-term plan to prevent recurring creek flooding and an immediate action plan to address administrative lapses that surfaced during the floods. He also instructed the administration to expedite the disbursal of cash doles and household assistance to affected families and stressed the need for closer coordination among government departments and public representatives during natural disasters.

The announcement comes after nearly 30% of Surat’s seasonal rainfall was recorded within a week, according to Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan. Authorities rescued around 3,600 people and shifted 4,100 residents to relief centres, with two NDRF and five SDRF teams deployed for relief and rescue operations. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the ₹500 crore allocation would fund creek development and improvement works aimed at providing a permanent solution to flooding caused by overflowing creeks. He added that the government would investigate any deficiencies in road construction, development works or flood management infrastructure and initiate strict action against those found responsible for negligence.

District Collector Tejas Parmar said the worst-affected areas included Palsana and Kamrej, while a rapid damage assessment is underway. Around 40 kutcha and pucca houses have been reported damaged across Surat city and district. Following the review in Surat, Patel travelled to Navsari to assess the flood situation there and review ongoing rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures with officials from Navsari and Valsad districts.
