This golden sandy beach remained surprisingly uncrowded during the recent heatwave.
Last week, Britons endured blistering temperatures reaching 37°C, and now, just days after a short respite, the heatwave looks set to make a comeback. Like the vast majority of people across the nation, I live in a home without air conditioning and depend on an electric fan to generate some cool air and a gentle breeze.
Yet during London's sweltering peak, it remained unbearable to even breathe or move in such intense heat. Thoroughly fed up, my mum and I decided to escape to the coast on an impromptu weekday outing.
Rather than heading for Brighton or Bournemouth, we made our way to Folkestone to soak up its golden sandy coastline and tranquil isolation.
The previous occasion I visited Folkestone was during the freezing depths of winter. Despite this, I was utterly mesmerised by the stunningly picturesque Sunny Sands beach.
My most treasured recollection was sitting on the brick wall above, gazing at the icy-blue waves rolling onto the shore. There was something strangely meditative about the water.
Heaving seaside hotspots like Brighton simply can't recreate that same feeling of serenity and peacefulness, so I was delighted when mum suggested we'd make for Folkestone.
To my astonishment, even during the heatwave, this sandy stretch was far from heaving with tourists. There were people soaking up the sun, enjoying games with their families and paddling in the sea, but there was ample room with certain spots feeling virtually deserted.
However, it's worth bearing in mind that I visited this coastal town on a Thursday evening. That said, I arrived around 5 pm, after children had left school and most workers had clocked off for the day, yet the beach remained wonderfully spacious and tranquil.
Folkestone Sunny Sands Beach is the town's most famous stretch of coastline, celebrated for its unusual expanse of golden sand along Kent's largely pebbled shore. Situated next to the harbour, it provides a classic seaside experience with safe bathing, family-oriented amenities, and convenient access to the town centre.
In December, I witnessed well-behaved dogs running freely, racing across the sand and paddling at the shoreline - a genuinely uplifting scene. However, during my most recent trip, none were visible.
According to Cotswolds Outdoor, from May 1 to September 30, dogs are not allowed on Sunny Sands Beach between 10am and 8pm. However, they are permitted on other sections of Folkestone Beach throughout the year, provided they remain under control.
Folkestone boasts a range of beaches. Just east of Sunny Sands beach lies Folkestone's main beach. This is an extensive pebble shore, particularly popular for strolling and wave watching.
Next to the beach sits Lower Leas Coastal Park, the largest free adventure play facility in the South East. There are also numerous public art installations to discover, offering additional appeal beyond the waterfront while providing vistas across the English Channel.
Further along the coastline lies Mermaid Beach. Set against dramatic cliffs and renowned for its pristine waters, it provides a far more tranquil setting than the busier central stretches.
Finally, there's Sandgate Beach, a laid-back pebble shore perfect for dog walks and catching stunning sunsets across the Channel.
Reaching Folkestone Beach is simple thanks to excellent road and rail links. By car, it's conveniently accessible via the M20, with the journey from London taking approximately two hours.
By train, Folkestone Central provides frequent high-speed services from London St Pancras in roughly an hour, followed by a 20-minute stroll or a brief bus or taxi journey to the seafront.
