The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts on Monday (July 6, 2026), forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel.
As torrential rains triggered red alerts across multiple districts in Maharashtra, authorities ordered the closure of schools and colleges and suspended bus services between Mumbai and Pune.
Authorities have advised private offices to permit employees to work from home, citing safety concerns and transport disruptions, as bus services have been halted in Mumbai, Pune, Raigad, Palghar, Satara, and along the Mumbai-Pune route.
The IMD has maintained a rainfall warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad for the next few hours. Wind speeds of 50–60 kmh are expected. The administration has advised citizens to stay indoors for non-essential tasks.

Employees should not risk commuting through waterlogged roads or landslip‑prone stretches, an official statement said. The transport department has confirmed that several highways remain blocked due to landslip and bridge submergence, making daily travel unsafe.
Pune-Mumbai ST bus services have been suspended until further notice due to a landslip on the route. Four ST buses that left for Mumbai in the morning were stuck at Urse Toll Naka and were safely sent back to Pune. Multiple state highways reported landslips and overflowing bridges, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Mumbai city and the suburban districts have declared a holiday for all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges. Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled for July 6. The University will release a new timetable soon.
Rainfall recorded in Mumbai between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. on July 5 stands at 63 mm, while the eastern suburbs recorded 87 mm of rainfall and the western suburbs recorded 88 mm of rainfall.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi ordered all schools to remain closed after read alert was issued in Pune. He appealed to residents to avoid rivers and streams and to step out only for essential work. In Satara, Collector Santosh Patil declared a holiday for primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in Mahabaleshwar, Patan, Jawali, Wai and Satara talukas.
Raigad and Palghar also shut all schools and colleges. Teachers and non‑teaching staff, however, have been directed to report to their institutions and assist the administration in disaster management. The Savitri, Kundalika, Amba and Patalganga rivers in Raigad have crossed the danger level as floodwater has accumulated in Mahad, Roha, Nagothane, Pen and Khopoli. Though some areas show receding water, many parts remain submerged.
In the Indrayani river water level has risen in Alandi and Dehu. The Pimpri‑Chinchwad Police Commissionerate has asked Warkaris, Dindi leaders and devotees to stay at their current locations, saying that citizens should not attempt to cross rivers, bridges or waterlogged roads. The weather department forecast continued rainfall in many parts of Raigad over the next 24 to 48 hours. The administration has kept all systems on alert.
