One local said they feel potholes in the villages are "definitely getting worse"
A look around Great Shelford and Little Shelford
Two Cambridgeshire commuter villages have been praised by locals for their "friendly" local community that is "almost one giant village". However, they complained about its "dangerous" potholes with one resident saying: "I could probably put my foot in it".
The Shelfords are both conveniently located around four to five miles from Cambridge and are roughly a four-minute drive from each other, or around 20-25 minutes on foot. Great Shelford is the larger of the two, and is home to more than 6,000 people, whilst Little Shelford has around 770 residents. In Great Shelford, there are a variety of amenities including shops, a primary school, pubs, cafes and a medical centre.
Little Shelford is not as lucky with its offerings but does have a pub called The Side Quest, beautiful countryside views and streets filled with pretty houses and cottages. As part of our Exploring Cambridgeshire series, we visited both villages and spoke to people about what it is like to live there.
Stephen Clements, has lived in Great Shelford for 40 years. He said he likes where he lives because when he wants to get out in the countryside, it's only two miles down the road.
Mr Clements says he has "everything I need" when it comes to transport links and doesn't feel as though he is missing anything in terms of amenities. However, not so positively, he continued: "In this village, and going out on the main road there are terrible potholes there.
"Some places are really bad but this is bad. All they [the council] do is paint yellow lines round them. They painted those yellow lines and then they get worn off so they come and paint more yellow lines. Meanwhile, the hole gets bigger." He feels they are "definitely" getting worse over the years.
Mark Clements, 61, highlighted a "famous" pub in Little Shelford he "loves" to visit when he returns from Germany to see his father. He said The Side Quest Pub on High Street is "awesome". He said he "really likes" coming back to Little and Great Shelfords but explained that house prices in Little Shelford are "expensive" considering there is less to do.
Mark Leaney, 38, has lived in Little Shelford for 30 years. He said "peace is the nicest thing and the local community", adding "everyone is very friendly, there's no real trouble here".
The 38-year-old said the Shelfords are "almost" twin villages, and that Great Shelford particularly, has got "so big now that no one sees it as two villages". He continued: "You've got the posh end of Great Shelford and the houses are very expensive and perhaps a little bit cheaper where the shops are but there's very little distance in the bridges of Great Shelford. It's almost one giant village."
Mr Leaney said “the only thing I will criticise and I think everyone you ask will agree with me is the roads”, he said. The roads in and around High Street, Church Street and Hauxton Road are “quite dangerous”, particularly at a corner coming off High Street, he said.
He said the village is “great” but the roads are definitely “the worst part”, adding that "I could probably fit my foot in it".
He also highlighted that the village is in close proximity to Foxton with “really really quick” trains into the capital, and therefore considers it a commuter village. Combined with the “lovely countryside” and the commuter village status, he said it is “exactly” like having the best of both worlds.
An 80-year-old woman who wished to remain anonymous said Great Shelford is "extremely convenient for everything" and in a location near to hospital and public transport. The resident feels like the Shelfords become one "competitive wise, with things like bowing and cricket".
The woman, who previously lived in the Peak District, said it is a "good place to live", "flat for elderly people and convenient for London". Also, raising concerns about potholes, she said: "They [the council] have actually repaired the road in some parts, and they've done tiny repairs instead of doing the whole lot across. So, it's just as bumpy, and when you take your car to the garage, it always has a problem."
A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the concerns about the condition of roads in Great and Little Shelford, in particular Cambridge Road which we inspect monthly.
“Enabling safe travel is a priority for us. Over the past two years, the council has made the biggest investment in the highways network in over a decade – we’re spending more than £78 million on highways maintenance in 2026/27.
“We are delivering large-scale maintenance across a number of roads in the Shelfords as part of or 2026/27 maintenance programme. Tunwells Lane was resurfaced earlier this year and both London Road and Cambridge Road will also be resurfaced this financial year.
“Residents can help us keep our roads and footpaths safe for all users, by reporting the issues they find online via our website.”
