Olivia Belli's music belongs to a post-minimalist tradition in which melodic clarity consistently takes precedence over structural complexity. With Daimon, her 2026 release on Sony Classical, the Italian composer and pianist remains true to this aesthetic while offering an ambitious reinterpretation of Homer's Odyssey, structured around three components: a piano concerto, a suite of character portraits, and a closing sonatina. At the core of the album is the Piano Concerto "Daimon," recorded with the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin under the direction of John Metcalfe. Cast in three movements ("Departure," "Journey," "Return"), the work unfolds with a fluid pianistic approach, highlighting refined textures that occasionally evoke Italian Baroque idioms. While the overall structure is both coherent and narratively clear, a certain linearity in the thematic development becomes apparent. The writing favors short, repetitive motifs, effective in their immediate impact, yet prone to smoothing out contrasts over time. The central movement, more introspective in nature, proves the most compelling in its overall balance. The Ithaca Suite presents a series of miniatures portraying figures encountered by Odysseus, along his journey. Here, the album gains in depth, notably through collaborations with soloists such as violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing and saxophonist Jess Gillam. The "Eumaeus" movement, shaped by the saxophone, introduces a welcome touch of melancholy that gently offsets the piano's regularity. The portrait aesthetic occasionally drifts toward a degree of uniformity, with several movements remaining close in language and lacking strong individual distinction. More restrained in scope, the Sonatina for Nausicaa brings the program to an intimate close. Its melodic simplicity is immediately appealing, though its occasionally predictable progressions prevent it from leaving a particularly lasting impression. As a performer, Belli advocates for her music with clarity of touch, precision, and a measured expressive restraint that aligns closely with her compositional voice. The orchestra, though precise, largely remains in the background, serving more as accompaniment than as an equal partner in dialogue with the piano. The recording, engineered by Jonathan Allen, places the piano prominently in the foreground, offering a clean and detailed stereo image. While this approach effectively captures the nuances of the performance, it comes at the expense of orchestral depth, which feels compressed, even somewhat constricted at times. Without attempting to redefine the genre, Daimon emerges as a coherent and accessible work, driven by a clear artistic vision. One may, however, regret a certain overall uniformity, which renders Odysseus' journey somewhat more serene than the original epic might suggest.
